WBZ AM is the 6th most popular station in the latest overall ratings. WRKO is the 8th most popular. There is no better programming these two AMs can have. They are both programmed well. They continue to enjoy success!
Boston continues to have two AMs in the top 10. Facts. Both stations are well run.
But "overall" counts for nothing, look at the Globe piece.... that gives the numbers for their P1
SEVENTH in AM Drive
Fifth in Mid days
Sixth in PM drive
Fifth in early evening
Last fall WBZ-F had 20.7 vs WEEI-F's 5.6
This time around (spring) BZ-F had lower ratings, but still #1 in 25-54 Males with a 16.3 share
WEEI-F came in SEVENTH with a 4.4.
I'd love to know WRKO's numbers for the same P1 in drive time, I don't think Khuner is pulling better than seventh in AM drive, but I could be wrong, but I would bet money that Howie Carr is doing better than sixth in PM drive in 25-54. He is the King of old angry white men in this market.
So WEEI FM is payroll heavy, they have a whole bunch of people on air, they are paying for Sox and Celtics radio rights too.
I don't think the Sox contract was as burdensome as it once was, but I'm sure it isn't cheap. At one point WEEI was cutting everywhere because the Sox contract was killing their bottom line.
I don't know, WEEI FM is the 101.7 of Sports, they are picking off a small part of the audience from the dominant sports station in the market WBZ-F, and maybe they can make it work with a 5 share (plus or minus) and 2 sports teams, but it is going to be a long time before they make a dent in WBZ-F's ad revenue.... and that is what really counts.
Now what can Audacity do?
Not much, they are stuck with the format, as there is not another format that the market will support... if it will work in Boston it is already here.
"We're number 2, we try harder"?
With the Celtics in the playoffs (for the time being) and the Red Sox starting their run for the basement of the AL east, maybe we will see an uptick in the next book, and IF the Sox do well it may carry into the summer
