Here ya good...somethin' to talk about for another month compliments of the Buckeye Media Hut occupants! Radio Industry News, Radio Show Prep, Radio Promotions, Radio Station Data, Podcast News

Of course, 550 wins the Sun City crowd overwhelmingly, and dominates in Leisure World. And I hear that they just won the heavy bidding battle to get the rights to broadcast the daily ambulance races!

I bought a new(er) car awhile back, with this exciting new technology called "HD Radio." The twin rimshots that carry the WOW Factor come in only slightly more clearly than KCDX, but that KZON HD2?

Wow. It sounds so good I don't mind the few minutes of commercials to get back to the very loud music faster. Seriously, it's really loud.

And this HD Radio thing might just take off someday. They just need to sink some marketing dollars into it. Perhaps some sort of HD Radio Alliance?

Hahahaha! That's a long time ago, back two owners ago. The current owner believes in cashing checks and protecting the copyright.

What happened to KOOL-FM? I remember they used to be a leader but have sort of collapsed. Same tired songs over and over like other Audacy classic hits stations (that do well), but I’m shocked they’re doing that poorly.

It does sound good in the car on HD! And loud....

I'm not shocked.

KOOL used to be a leader because the previous owners put money into the product. Live, local legacy talent (Tom Peake comes to mind), promotions that super-served the audience (Summer Splash, KOOL World Tour, treating concerts at the casino like they were first run events and not oldies tours), and a 40-year brand they leaned into. KOOL was a "heritage" oldies station. The good Dr. and others made jokes about the station playing "Brown Eyed Girl" too often, but KOOL was like "yeah...we do. Now take a look at those 25-54 numbers. Notice anything?"

For a good while, KOOL was the billing monster of the former CBS cluster. While the other two properties battled it out with their competitors, KOOL was a cash box. Audacy (iHeart 2.0) has turned it into a jukebox.

Side note: Yes, Mega is sounding better than ever, and The Bounce is doing better than anything that's occupied that frequency in years. I'm just wondering aloud how long the new PD will last. Sierra H has a history of bringing in new talent, refreshing their stations, and then saying "yeah...let's just go back to what we were doing before."

They dumped their on-air staff (some of whom were very entertaining) and ditched their Oldies playlist for updated junk.

Simple.

The problem with legacy talent is sooner or later, they get old and pass away. Not much a radio station can do about that. They can hire new talent, but they don't have 60 year heritage.

KOOL has the audience it can sell. KOAI has a bigger share, but they can't sell it. I would bet KOOL still makes more money than the competition in the format. That's all that matters.

In the case of KOOL, in their defense, the owners have done nothing very different at their sister classic hits stations in San Diego, Los Angeles, Detroit, Philadelphia, Miami, etc. Those stations are doing just fine.

I would bet KOOL still makes more money than the competition in the format. That's all that matters.
Sure. At the end of the month, the numbers are all that matters. Or the quarter. Next year? Five years? They don't seem to care.

KOOL used to make money hand over fist, but they spent a lot of money to get there. Audacy looked at it and said "why are we spending money to make money? Let's cut our way to profitability instead."

So the station used to spend 100 dollars to make 120. Then they fired everyone and spent 50 to make 70. Next move is to cut even more, and spend 30 to make 50. Margins are the same, so they're "successful."

Usually in business, the rule is "if you aren't growing, you're failing." When it comes to KOOL - one of the premiere classic hits stations in their portfolio - Audacy seems to be saying "grow it? Why? Shrink it and make money that way."

I'm wondering when this thinking will work it's way up the chain, and they decide that Broadway Bill is just too expensive and WCBS would be better served with an intern voice tracking liner cards over song intros.

I'm wondering when this thinking will work it's way up the chain,

It already has. As the post above yours pointed out, there are no longer full heritage staffs (other than morning drive) at any of the classic hits stations. That's already happened, and in most of those markets, the stations are still Top 5. WCBS is #3, KRTH is #2, WOMC is #1. Phoenix is the only one. I don't believe it's a function of spending money. Spending money won't bring back the past. That's what the audience wants. It's not going to happen.

The rapidly shrinking audience. Radio is going the way of the phone book. Sure, the Yellow Pages were still #1 until the end, but bragging rights don't mean a lot if you go out on the top of a dying industry.

Spending money isn't going to change that. They can give everyone at KOOL a raise, and that's not going to change device usage.

So if you know the audience is shrinking, the budget shrinks accordingly.
