AM Frequency of the Week: 600

600 here in 'Northeast Pennsylvania' * during the day is a bunch of nothing. In fact, there isn't even that much slop from Philly's 610 even though they send a lot of their signal our way. That low frequency on the dial has been a torrent of QRM static since I moved here in 1993.

NIGHTS have been the usual predictable fun, though. Logged here have been WCAO Baltimore and rebel-without-a-castro Rebelde. But one night I caught WICC from Connecticut. I only saw saw them mentioned once on this 600 thread. Their signal from across Long Island Sound used to show up in ratings books in the Nassau-Suffolk market.
And WCAO, with a religious format, would show up VERY well in the ratings held in the Salisbury / Ocean City Maryland survey. WCAO sends all of their signal that way anyway, but still .....

* We're actaully closer to the Maryland border than to the New York borderline, but just about all the Skooks I know call the place 'Coal Country'' or 'northeast PA'.

It was indeed Adult Standards as "The Bridge" Final incarnation before heading to FM, first at 100.5, then ultimately 102.7, where it is now a pretty badly performing Alternative station. Pattison has a ton of outdoor advertising, many radio stations and many car dealerships in western Canada. You can see how those businesses might dove tail together pretty nicely!

"600 The Bridge". Yeah, I remwmber that. And, I also remember thinking that, it wasn't such a great moniker, given the Vancouver traffic snarls with the multiple bridges as choke points. The reason for more than a few late appointments on my biz trips there. Anyway, thanks for refreshing my memory and filling me in on Jim Pattison and what became of that version of the Vancouver 600.

I also had been thinking that Pattison was also in the car business, but I wasn't quite sure if I was right about that. Thanks again.

Folks in Vancouver are quite proud of their bridges, even though they are an absolute nightmare traffic-wise. Traffic in that place is so bad they can support a full time 24/7 50/50 traffic station on 730AM- CKGO. (Old west coast DXers will remember this as CKLG "LG73"

I went down the rabbit hole. Very impressive. And it all started with a radio station. And I like those bridges. Except when I'm stuck on one! :)
 
Chicago by the lakeshore:

Daytime: WMT, the only Iowa station I hear consistently during the daytime.

Nighttime: WMT can still be there, as can be CKAT in North Bay, ON, especially if you're right by the lake. I've also logged WREC Memphis, WSJS in Winston-Salem, NC, and also WBOB in Jacksonville, FL when they were doing their DX test several months ago.

At the very end of its life, 600 was "The Unforgettable 600" with adult standards. Some of that music migrated over to CISL 650 after 600 shut down and began simulcasting 100.5 The Peak. Now CISL is gone along with most classic hits made before 1980.
 
From NW San Antonio:

Day: Nothing

Sunset: KTBB comes up, with WREC eventually mixing in.

Night: To the NE/SW, WREC is usually most dominant, with KTBB and XEHW "La Mejor" (near Mazatlán) mixing in and sometimes coming to the fore. Very late night/early morning XEHW tends to dominate. Aiming NW/SE, I can null out those stations and usually hear KROD in El Paso. Occasionally, R. Rebelde in Cuba will fade up.

Sunrise: After XEHW and KROD are gone, KTBB returns for a while when it goes to day power/pattern.

DX/Retro: WMT is a very rare visitor, which I've heard once at sunset and just a few times at night under WREC. I've logged KSJB in Jamestown, ND, once; it was shortly before sunrise back in fall 2015. Also, I used to hear XEMN in Monterrey at night, but it appears to be off the air now.

There used to be an XELAZ in Ciudad Guzmán with "La Mejor" branding that I would sometimes hear around sunrise. It was retired a few years back.
 
Living down the Chesapeake Bay from Baltimore, in Annapolis, it's pretty much WCAO (urban gospel "Heaven 600") with their 5 kW directional signal pointed my direction. Also available in IBOC which sounds pretty good in digital, though it hashes any DX potential on 590 and 610. Once in a great while I can turn a radio 90 degrees and hear faint Spanish language programing, which I have ID'ed as Radio Rebelde.
 
South Mississippi:

Day: Gospel 600 WVOG New Orleans
Night- both KTBB Tyler and WREC Memphis at about equal strength, and WBOB Jacksonville during their DX test.

I used to DX CKLG 730 from here in SoCal way back when. Please correct me if I'm wrong...I think their big Top 40 competitor was CFUN 1410 ? Could never hear CFUN down here but when I lived up in NorCal I listened to them frequently.
 
Finally caught WMT this evening around 6:30 p.m. here in Pickerington, Ohio. I am guessing it was right before pattern change, because about 6:45 the already weak signal sunk almost but not completely into the mud behind a little slop from local WTVN.
I never heard a legal ID, but there were mentions of area code 319, which serves a good portion of Iowa.
Initially I thought it might have been WREC, which I've never heard here.

Congratulations on a very nice catch. WMT only sends only about 1kw worth of juice in my direction when they're on night patter Probably even a little less to yours. But regardless of whether day or night, it's still an accomplishment.
