WOGL Rebrands at Big 98.1

Of course KOOL’s beauty pageant numbers are being walloped by KOAI, but at least KOOL probably still generates a little bit of cash…
They barely overlap. KOOL is mostly 25-54 and 35-64, even going back 6 to 8 months. KOAI, which stands for "Old, Ancient, Impaired", is almost all over 65-

Unless the owner takes an ego hit and makes a change, the “WOW” factor will be KOAI’s balance sheet if it isn’t already.

Listened for the past couple of hours and had some more takeaways:

All of this seems very thrown together. The whole presentation is very minimal and feels like it was put together in less than a day. It’s mostly the VO guy saying “Big 98.1” with different effects on the liners, accompanied by listener shout outs serving as liners saying “Big 98.1”, “I love Big 98.1” (ironic since it just went on the air) etc - straight from the KRTH playbook.

The addition of newer stuff hasn’t come at the expense of much, if anything from the 70s. They played “Brick House” then “More than a Feeling” in less than a 10 minute period. I would venture to say it’s still more conservative and older leaning than many of the other Audacy classic hits stations like KRTH.

Tons of cold segues. I get that it just went on the air yesterday, but I don’t really get why they didn’t at least get some kind of imaging package together before changing everything to get listeners more familiar with the brand than random people yelling “Big 98.1” in to a microphone in between songs. Brand new formats are launched that are way more put together than this.

If they wanted to wipe away any vestige of WOGL, they’ve done that, but hopefully they plan on putting a little more life in to this thing than right now. It just sounds very cold and impersonal. They made these changes, but there’s nothing really acknowledging it on the air. Just weird. I get nuking the WOGL brand, but there should have been a better prepared replacement, especially in a top 10 market.

If it’s any indication, I listened to the similar 95.7 The Spot in Houston earlier today - The Spot was a lot more entertaining.

KLUV also seems fairly conservative compared to a station like KRTH, when looking through their recently played in recent weeks I have seen one or two ocassions in which they played 4 1970s songs in a given hour, but none from the 1990s!

Probably because KLUV does not want to trample over KJKK, which isn't a particularly edgy Adult Hits station.

That's pretty much how WOGL was sounding during the latter part of the "Nobody Plays More '80s" era too. The imaging had become more lively since late last year, but I guess they've gone back on that now. Perhaps it's by design. I prefer a more lively presentation myself, but maybe at-work listeners want less "clutter".

You know yeah... all of this reading and listening did get me to thinking.
How can listeners love Big 98.1 when its not even been on the air for 3 days yet?
Also, what is there to love that is that much different than WOGL's previous branding? Since listeners come for the music, its not like that has changed any...

KJKK may be hurting KLUV. They haven’t programmed it like KCBS which does a pretty good job of complimenting yet staying out of KRTH’s way.

WOGL had gotten boring on air - the top of the hour ID, which was always hyped, became very anti-climactic. I believe I said it earlier in this thread, but I have read the VP/format captain of classic hits is not a fan of jingles and “clutter” on air which is why WOGL was probably sounding like it did. KRTH “de-cluttered” a handful of years ago under the same leadership that is now national I believe. CBS-FM probably gets an exception with this since jingles are such a massive part of its heritage. I just hope Big 98.1 gets some personality. The Drive in Washington is a nice midpoint of not cluttered yet not Big 98.1 level boring, but WIAD is still saying “Nobody Plays More ‘80s”.

I was being a bit snarky but I do get it. To an average person, that is simply not something they’re going to burn brain cells on. It’s not go By to register, nor should it.

yeah.. I am sure most wouldn't notice, but we're not called radio geeks for nothing! we're not most people :D

To me, this just blurs the lines between classic hits and adult hits even further in this city.
They're both rock based.
The only difference is that ben leans a little newer at times, but its core is much the same as WOG>.
But I don't think it'll take many years for WOGL to be right where ben is.
So then what. Ben moves slightly newer , too?

Audacy should change the call letters of 98.1. Perhaps change them to W251XX. They shouldn’t have the WOGL call letters anymore, Big 98.1 is a disgrace to the legacy.

While we’re at it, KLUV should be sold to Educational Media Foundation, it would fit their brand well.

That may happen eventually, but certainly not to that; it's not a FM translator. Also to call it a "disgrace to the legacy" of the station to rebrand is hyperbolic. As discussed before, times have changed, nothing lasts forever, and it is incredibly too early to say that this is a doomed endeavor.

That is no reason to sell a station, especially one with a Top 5 cume in the market, and the revenue that Audacy makes from it.

Was just giving a listen to Big 98.1 to see how it sounded outside of the legal ID that someone posted, and it's definitely a work in progress. I will agree with many people who have said the execution thus far is lackluster. The station is majorly lacking personality, and it will be interesting to see if/when that personality is rebuilt. The ball is in Audacy/Tim Herbster's court to figure out how to guide the station through this rebranding.

Also, a side note: I did hear some funky technical issues while listening as well. Boston's "More Than A Feeling" segued into a shotgun, followed by "My Prerogative" by Bobby Brown, the latter at a much lesser volume than the shotgun and the previous track; it was almost as if someone left a fader down in the studio. Then there was an eventual segue into Matchbox Twenty's "3AM", and at the end of the song there was 10 seconds of dead air before a segue into another quick shotgun. Yikes.
