Fun fact: I haven't quite figured out which "Gold" transmitter is where, I DO know where the studio in London.. Unless, it's moved, it's on Leicester Square in the Theatre district of London. I've walked right by it,
When I was there the studios were in the Euston Tower. Don't know if that's still the case.

I checked out the Manchester SDR during daylight at that location (17:30) today. 1548 was Gold. Weak but steady. At the same time, The BBC flamethrower from the London area on 648 was missing, while 1458 was Gold on obvious local signal. To me, all of tht was sort of a mixed bag. 648 had a decent signal the other night, so that makes me think that the day signal isn't strong enough to break through the filter or whatever during daylight, despite the good nighttime signal. 1458 sounds exactly like it did the other night.

As for 1458, to my mind, the mystery continues. My best guess is that it was late emough in the afternoon that skywave may have been kicking in. The problem with that theory is that there was no fading....although daytime skywave is known for extended fade free periods. But it could have been a distant relay transmitter. Which, if true, might explain what sounds like convergence at night.

Indeed, as you alluded to, sometimes broadcasters in the UK and elsewhere in Europe, operate on a single transmitter with multiple transmitters. BBC Radio 4 on 720 with several low-powered transmitters is (or used to be) one example.

Whatever.... I'm looking forward seeing if I can unwrap this from the other side of the pond. As well as hearing other insights that anyone else here might have.

Per MWList, 1548 is at the Saffron Green Transmitting Station, in, you guessed in, Saffron Green, which on the map appears to be northwest of London.

Strongest eastern WA tropo enhancement I've heard in a while, all this morning.
93.7 KDRK was so loud in Ellensburg that I thought we gained a new local. RDS and 3-4 bars. KZZU was pummeling KDBL on 92.9. 96.1 KFOO was the same way.

Dropping Ryegrass towards Vantage it got even better. Signals went to five bars on numerous Spokane stations, and 104.3 KHTR Moscow/Pullman (first time ever). 104.7 K284BW Moscow (Hits 104.7) 100 watts was 2 bars and strongest ever.
89.5 KEWU was very strong and I got to hear a vocal version of 'Un Homme et une Femme (A Man and a Woman)' by Eliane Elias...a great Brazilian jazz singer. 95.3 KPND was beating out KXLE a good chunk of the time. I loved that station when I traveled through Idaho last month. I'd say the same with KEWU and Hits 104.7!
I also logged 102.3 'K102' KICR Coeur D'Alene for the first time in that area. It wasn't matching KWDR-93.5. It's only 172 watts, as well!

It felt like I was driving through downtown Coeur D'Alene.

Surprisingly, VERY LITTLE signal from Lewiston stations this morning. I usually get 94.1/101.5/occasionally 96.5/very occasionally 106.9 over and under Positive Life Moses Lake, not today.
I don't think KZZL-99.5 has been operating on full power the last couple of months either. They were a regular and are barely or never in even when KHTR is strong.

Well for me, it's been about 15 years and a couple of format tweaks ago,, so by now the studio could be just about anywhere. My more recent trips were mostly confined to the Mayfair area around my hotel. I did use the Euston train station a couple of times (en route to visit my reps)., But I'm not at all familiar with that area or where the Euston Tower is. (My most vivid memory of the place is that it cost me the equivalent of about 31 bucks for a round trip of 37 minutes in each direction on the commuter train, LOL!)

I couldn't open the link, but I knew the sticks were northwest of the city. Which makes sense given that the 97kw are aimed southeast. Or at least they were. Given the decent signal I was hearing on the Manchester SDR was pretty decent. I wouldn't be surprised if they now have a different pattern, or if it's just the old pattern that's leaking. I'm not suggesting either, I'm just saying I wouldn't be surprised.

Sadly, I didn't pick up any meteor scatter signals from the Eta Aqua-rids this morning, however Tropo season has now officially kicked off in the Cheyenne area. Yahoo!
It was practically all re-logs, however, with the usual suspects from Sterling, Fort Collins, and Denver. The only potentially new signal was on 90.7, running classical music. However, my guess is just KGUD, which I have logged before.
This is the first spring after local translator K258DN signed on, and KQMT just went and stomped on it this morning, and I had to make a serious effort to null KQMT enough to hear my local, so my hopes are way up for dx-ing 99.5 in the future.

What was new and interesting to me was that the HD signal of KDHT says "HITS", whereas before it just said "KPTT", so they are really trying to get the brand name out there. There was also no HD3 subchannel for "Evolution".
Also, KYGO's HD signal just says "HD" on it, which is a sign that they are experimenting with a longer string of characters.
Weirdly, KBPI's signal was blank for a while, and now it's off the air completely. However, the music still can be heard on the HD2 subchannel of KDHT. Weird!

Last year, my tropo began on May 7th, and this year, it's May 6th. So no new logs here, but some interesting observations so kick off 2022. The tropo was strongest around 3am, and kind of moved up and down the dial for a few hours before petering out around 9am.

I swear, as soon as May starts, 6m Sporadic-E just "magically" starts to appear on the propagation maps (aka DXMaps), and then we see FM ES occur. It's almost as if people dont even think to look on VHF before May, and as soon as May 1st, everyone is like "6 meter time now." It's funny though lol

Well, FM Es did occur in the southeastern US this afternoon, maybe a half-hour covering the Mid Atlantic and SE towards TX and AR.

Meanwhile, KOZI-93.5 Chelan made it into Quincy and George (very weakly). KWDR Royal City was completely off the air for about an hour this afternoon. They are a regular in Ellensburg.

It does seem to work that way.

What even happened this morning on 6m. Even saw Randy in NV got some FM ES too.

Might want to check the band out your way as I saw 90.7 Mexicali being logged in TX. There's some scattered FT8 in the PacNW as well.
Top of band right now TX to FL.
To heck with it! I still need to go through July **2021** recordings!!!

I would be if I wasn't in Pullman lol

You're in Pullman...for the WSU graduation? Cool! I went through Colfax and Palouse on my ID trip last month, but didn't drive into Pullman to avoid crazy late afternoon traffic. I was already late on my itinerary and really needed to cross into Idaho.

Check out 104.7 'Hits' while you're in town. They have an unusually-large playlist of '80s/'90s music, a mix between adult hits and classic hits. 100.5 KQZB isn't too bad either, but with no stream. KPND 95.3 should make it now that Positive Life moved to 96.9, and their AAA mix is reminiscent of KBCO in Denver or other classic adult alternative stations. Great variety, spent a lot of time on that station in north ID. 89.5 KEWU is a great jazz station in Cheney operated by Eastern WA University. I don't think 98.5 'K-Hits' makes it into Pullman, they are in Lewiston, but they are another awesome station with a big variety of classic hits that puts K-Earth to shame.

Yeah I got family graduating there today, so that's fun so far.

Bro, literally any other classic hits station, even variety such as BOB FM is a lot better than KRTH, haha. Such a shame cause I used to like K-Earth a whole lot and held it to a high regard in the L.A Market.

I brought my RSP but sadly found that my antenna just didnt have enough room to fit in my luggage (Stellar Labs OmniDirectional), so I ended up bringing the Eton Elite.

I swear when I get back i'm making an receiver on GlobalTuners with my RSP and Yagi when i'm not home.

Got my first Es of the season here in San Antonio this morning! The opening started around 10 a.m. with Mexican stations coming in from Baja California and Sonora. Had two relogs and three new loggings - 90.7 XHTIM in Tijuana, 93.5 XHPPO in Puerto Peñasco, and 102.5 (MUF for the session) XHUAN in Tijuana.

The opening lasted about an hour. 45 minutes later, stations started coming in from Florida. I had five relogs, and the MUF reached 95.5. That session lasted a little over an hour.

East Coast blowing up with E-skip at this hour, LPFMs from Florida being logged in Ohio and deep south (TN, AL, etc.) into Pennsylvania. Go get 'em!!

I got my first two E-skips of the season here in Moses Lake:
- 89.5 KHCB Salina, KS (w/ RDS PI 'KHCB') -- caught on SDR
- 91.9 K220FA Haviland, KS (w/ RDS PI 'KJHL') -- caught on SPARC and SDR

Also @SkyWaveDX - Pullman Wal-Mart is a good spot for Spokane DX. Perhaps E-skip too.

That whole stretch of US Hwy 95 in between Moscow and Genesee is full of interesting DX. Pulled in KFFM 107.3 Yakima last month in that area, as well as KWLN 103.3 in Wilson Creek and a country station that I'm sure was KIZN Boise on 92.3. Once you start dropping the hill towards Lewiston, intermod city as the transmitters are spitting distance. I never traveled to the Camas Prairie/Grangeville, so I don't know if Boise weakly makes it into that area (probably not).

I'm sure I'll catch at least one Es opening while I'm doing student teaching in Quincy. But I won't have a radio around for lunchtime breaks this Friday as the kids are going on their first field trip to Seattle since COVID! In Quincy, 4th/5th grade Seattle field trips are a yearly and decades-long tradition (but not in 2020 + 2021). Besides, why DX in Seattle, where it's full of LPFMs, translators, and IBOC crud? I wouldn't return to live there. And housing prices are outrageous, even 30-40 mi out of Seattle.
The post-graduation plan so far is to go back and live with family in Yakima during July/early August, then it's off to ??? in August. It could be anywhere from just Naches or Selah, to Omak, Twisp, Oroville, and again, still looking at jobs in north Idaho too...multiple 4th-5th grade jobs just went up in the school districts in Sandpoint and Rathdrum.

6m looks like its starting up here on the west coast, and one in the northern region crossing into Canada. WA to CA again?
