Steve French Retiring

I was watching Sports Talk on channel 35 this evening, and Steve French announced he will be leaving broadcasting, both on radio and TV. May 2nd will be his last day.

Perhaps when Weigel gets full control of W27EA-D, I'd imagine that their changes will take effect right after the last airing of Sports Talk.

Good for Steve. He'll get to enjoy a long and happy retirement. Something that Howie, Stan and Tom didn't get a chance to do. Let the speculation begin as to who moves into the mornings. Do Bill Hall and Joey Harper take over mornings along with Phil. As much as she is a listener favorite, Joyce stated she was not interested in taking over permanently, even though she's been doing it for 5 days a week (except for Thursdays) for nearly a year.

Obviously there are exceptions, but many radio folks get to the point, after 30, 40+ years in the same industry, it's time for either something different (even if part time), or just full retirement, if a person can afford it. This is happening in all types of businesses as well as media. As for Joyce....she also does parttime for WKSU....has been for a few years. She and husband Don are huge animal lovers. Nice folks.

So Jim Isabella departed WNIR recently and now Steve French. I wonder if it is just a coincidence or is something else going on?

It's going to be tough to lure someone to join that station when you still require a six day work week with only 1-2 weeks of vacation per year with a salary that is considerably lower than what you are going to get doing something else. No matter how much love and passion you may have for the industry, the six day work week alone is likely a deal breaker for many.

I didn't get a chance to hear Steve's farewell either on WNIR or channel 35. I hope he kept it classy.

So apparently Phil Ferguson will be doing Sports Talk on Monday and Thursday for now. Phil does a good job. He seems to be very knowledgeable and doesn't b*tch and moan as Steve frequently did. Only problem is he talks to the same caller every time and they talk for about a half hour. It would be nice if he could take calls from other callers.

No Sports Talk show tonight on 35. Did they pull.the plug on it?
Good question. Steve claimed that Phil was going to be on this week, but so far he wasn't on today or on Monday. Seeing that W27EA's assignment of authorization was approved right after Steve's final show, it's possible that Media-Com is now in the process of transferring the station over to Weigel, or Weigel now has complete ownership, effectively canning Sports Talk.

Listening to WNIR, Phil and midday host John Denning are off with Covid, along with other staffers. That would explain his absence.
WNIR is still operating TV 35. I think the fcc gives a window for parties to exchange keys after a sale is approved. I imagine Weigel is busy at the transmitter installing their program feeds, transmitter connections and remote functions now. I doubt that they would use any of the Kent facilities. I doubt they plan any locally originated programming at all.

Yes, I don't think Weigel will be using the Kent facilities, but seeing that W27EA-D holds a class A license, they would be required to air some sort of local program/public affairs on the main .1 channel. They can always file to drop the class A license and operate as a regular low power station with less restrictions, but then they'll no longer be protected from channel displacement, and stations in adjacent markets can create more interference should they decide to maximize their coverage.

A no brainer there. Just run the Son of Ghoul two or three times a week! That old dude really cracks me up!
But I'm pretty sure that they have to run some sort of localized public affairs program, which Sports Talk fulfills to a degree.

And, if by any chance a HD feed of MeTV ends up on 35.1, I'm 100% sure Weigel will not pre-empt portions of the schedule for Son of Ghoul as that would be a direct competitor to Svengoolie, which has been produced by Weigel since 1994. Upon taking control of W27EA-D, Weigel will likely stop airing SOG and replace it with something else, perhaps with another show that they produce or some localized program should they build a production facility here in the Cleveland area.
