How are "lunar" songs usually determined?

Curious as to how the logic goes into determining what's suitable for "overnights only."

Is it traditionally songs that test on the lower end of the scale... or songs that test very well but don't quite match the "feel" of the station during the day?

That one. Marginal songs, or songs that are being rested 6 AM to Midnight. The way that can be done is to have the songs timed to go to an overnight only category every certain number of days, and then return for a few daytime plays.

Probably not in most cases.

That makes sense.

In the context of Classic Hits, I catch some on a local station in the middle of the night that I don't hear in other dayparts. "Rock Lobster" and "My Own Worst Enemy" to name a couple of examples. Fun to hear, but doesn't surprise me that they might be lower scoring and not as big "consensus hits."

Funny thought. There recently was a long, depressing ballad that stations were hesitant to add in morning drive. Nothing ruins the mood than a long, depressing ballad. So some stations thought about sticking it in overnights. Until the research came in, and it turned out people liked long depressing ballads. It ended up being #1.

Keep in mind the labels can see where stations play songs. If the song is banished to overnight, the rep will ask why.

Don't leave us hanging...what was the song? (It's true I wouldn't know it anyway since I stopped listening to new music after Grunge... and most of that was depressing too, LOL!)

Sometimes they're indicated as such by the record company. Duran Duran's "Hungry Like the Wolf" had a "Night Version" which was longer and had much more audible female cries of passion, whereas in the ordinary single version they're buried in the mix as the song is fading out.

Is it likely that a classic hits format goes a bit harder at night or no? One of the classic hits in my area seems to pull out stuff like Rock and Roll All Night and You Shook Me All Night Long for late nights, don't hear them as much during the day.

I have heard of classic rock stations dayparting songs and we did a bit at one of my stations. But not sure how common the practice is.

Maybe Adele's "Easy on Me"? It's a depressing ballad that recently was a #1 hit, although at 3:44 I wouldn't call it that long.
It's long by CHR standards. Another possibility: Olivia Rodrigo's "driver's license," which clocks in at 4:02. Although I wouldn't put it past David to pull an old trick of his again: The long, sad ballad he's teasing us with will turn out to be five minutes of misery, sung entirely in Spanish, that's No. 1 on some pop chart in one or more countries in the Spanish-speaking world.
