5 KSTP-NBC St. Paul
6 MSG/Weather
7 KCMT-ABC/NBC Alexandria

9 KMSP-ABC Minneapolis

12 WGN Chicago
13 KDLH-CBS Duluth

Interesting that they carried KDLH from Duluth which is about 150 miles away.

St Cloud is about 60 miles from Minneapolis and back in 1979 (as now) is part of the Minneapolis DMA. Back in 1979 the counties to the N, NW and W were part of the Alexandria DMA (which consisted of just KCMT and KWCM PBS)

Yeah that is weird considering CBS was a minority owner of WCCO back then.

110 miles from downtown St Cloud to Mankato
Add 25 miles to the KEYC tower in Lewisville

Also KEYC was co-channel with KNMT (KCMT's Bemidji-area satellite, which was likely closer to St. Cloud than KEYC)

You would have gotten different news from Duluth and coverage of NE Minnesota that would have been unique from the other channels, maybe that was a part of it? Was there a different variety in non-network programming that was attractive?

I have some old schedules from the 70s and early 80s and it didnt look like WCCO pre-empt anything (again CBS was a minority owner of WCCO back then)
