I find it odd that Springfield passed up much closer WXIX, which had cable carriage up I-75 toward Lima and into West Virginia, for WTTV and WUAB

Very possibly because of the microwave networks delivering WTTV and WUAB. But I'm pretty sure WXIX had some kind of microwave carriage, they got as far east as Charleston WV around that time, and it's highly unlikely a head-end antenna there could have picked up any kind of consistently usable signal from WXIX.

Seems kind of strange that they would give Columbus stations prime channel slots, and consign Dayton to the nosebleed section. Columbus is not all that far away, and easily receivable OTA in Springfield, but Clark County has been Dayton ADI/DMA from at least 1975 onward (this per Broadcasting Yearbook).
