WHTG Great Gold 1410am

I listen to this station when I’m in the area. It also broadcasts on 100.7 FM but the coverage is spotty at best. 1410 puts out a solid signal from the shore up to around Great Adventure on I-195.

I am getting 100.7 here in Midwood Brooklyn. It comes over Washington Cemetery.

Now, it's the BREEZE.The original Breeze was great especially when it still had a syndicated format with many Country crossovers when we had no country station in Brooklyn.

Yes, as reported on Radio Insight, WHTG 1410 AM / W264DH 100.7 FM is now "The Breeze: The Jersey Shore's Feel Good Station", but with the same Oldies format as before.

I heard the station for a few hours during 4th of July week for the first time since last year and I definitely noticed far fewer 50’s and early 60’s songs and a lot more 70’s. At the time they were still calling themselves “Great Gold.” What struck me was the continued lack of commercials and the obvious fact that this station is still little more than a “computer in a closet” that doesn’t even stream. Why bother even updating the playlist on a local AM with a 250 watt FM translator? It’s not like the advertising bucks are suddenly going to come pouring in simply because they’re spinning Candi Staton instead of The Shirelles. I was actually a little disappointed in the update because either way the station as it stands is a loss leader at best and they traded something rather unique for more of a cookie cutter format.

Yesterday I listened again on the way home from the shore and I noticed that they are now “The Breeze” but the format is virtually the same. I wonder with the new branding and updated playlist within the last year or so if they will add some live programming and sell more spots. My guess is they will not but only time will tell. In the meantime it’s still cool, at least for me, to drive down to the shore and hear decades old music emanating from the AM radio.

@RadioWreck ......
Right on about that signal. In Queens near JFK Airport WHTG was a daytime regular. And out as far as Massapequa Park on Long Island's south shore they were even louder, on a mere garage wall radio.
At the time, ~1963, they identified their MoR programming only as '1410 Radio'. I remember hearing the call letters maybe once back then.

I think WHTG might want to consider infomercials, leasing time to Bro. Stair and some non-English programmers since English isn't working and even the folks that prefer oldies don't seem to like the updating they have made. My sarcastic point is 'not perfect' is better than nothing. And if they are struggling do badly the suggested programming might be next.

For us AMs with a 250 watt translator, at least in our case, took us from about 5.3 to about 38.1 in the 35+ demo. A friend is selling 4x as much as when he was a stand alone AM. So, the difference a measly 250 watt FMer makes is about like night and day.

I know a guy that had a LPFM doing oldies. He heard from lots of folks considering, about 300 he knew of by name because they felt they needed to message him. He announced for 6 months he needed about $350 a month more than he was getting from his 2 underwriters. He asked listeners to offer a few dollars to keep the oldies playing. After 6 months. listeners contributed $0. Then they got mad because he quit the oldies format.

For someone to suggest that WHTG-AM consider infomercials and leasing time needs to have their Radio Discussion membership revoked. Do we really need more brokered programming on the AM radio dial? Press Communications has been relatively consistent with (more or less) keeping an Oldies based format on this frequency for decades. Granted, it's probably a tax write-off for the owners, but give them credit for offering something which serves older music fans who have less choices when it comes to legacy media.

EastBakeOven anyone that suggests we can't have an opinion other than yours is likely not right for a discussion board. Leasing and infomercials is sometimes the only way to pay the bills in a major market when you cannot afford additional staff and additional layers to your radio station.

Its a shame they didn't stream in the past, before the Breeze, during the Tandler years when they played only 50, 60 and early 70 oldies.

You are correct, but WHTG-AM's music format does not appear to be in danger of disappearing anytime soon. Press has been content with keeping the AM station pretty much as is, while their FMs have gone through various changes over the years. For whatever reason, WHTG-AM's current format and operation works with the company's business model. The latest ratings (Fall 22) shows WHTG-AM holding steady with a .9 share for the second book in a row. There's actually two other local signals in the market which have lesser numbers. There's no need for WHTG to resort to leasing and infomercials at this time.

My apologies for suggesting about revoking membership. I was joking, but that kind of negative tone is not necessary.

In it's current form, WHTG exists as the owner's personal jukebox. The rest of the cluster makes money and he made tens of millions of dollars from selling the two television stations he used a loophole to move from Nevada and Wyoming respectively into the New York City and Philadelphia TV markets. And that's after selling his previous group at the peak of consolidation in the late 90s.

I'm all for a station serving the underserved especially when the rest of the cluster can carry it. I doubt the .9 does them any good since agencies don't buy that deep and don't buy 55+. They can get buys from the agencies so they rely on the mom and pop. The thing that happened to me in a major metro with a decent signal was not having enough listeners in a one location trade area to pull enough results to get renewals no matter what portion of the city the business was located.

This station I guess is now like a copy of the old Breeze (107.1/99.7) I think it sounds good where it is, but an Ocean County simulcast would be nice too...

Last time I listened in person (on 100.7) it didn't even make it into Ocean County and faded out only 7 miles down the Parkway near Wall Twp (Exit 98). The transmitter is right at Exit 105 sharing the tower with WKMK (106.3)

Reminds me of the old WADB/WOBM-AM (1310/1160/96.7/104.1) which recently went country, it would be great to hear again in Ocean County, if not 104.1 then 99.7 maybe
