Majic Change

The station really needs a 100% rebrand. It simply is not as "Majic" as it was even 20 years ago.

Perhaps new call letters and an indication that it is more geared towards millennial's who grew up accustomed to their parents 70's & 80's music. Don't like the new logo as it looks almost photo shopped. Any good ninth grade graphics class could've come up with this one.

Don't have a signature yet, but "I miss listening to terrestrial radio in Cleveland" might be the ticket.

'Bout time. The old one was feeling very dated, though I'm not a fan of this new one.

How long has the old one been used? Early '90s? I know there's been a few variations of it, particularly the one with the black & gold rings around it.
Actually, since the middle 80s when Lanigan first came back from Tampa.

It's had minor tweaks here and there, but the basic design came in with Lanigan.

It's almost like the logo was the last connection to the Lanigan days, and now that's gone.

Only radio geeks care about the call letters for music stations for the most part.. esp. if the calls arent regularly used as part of station imaging, etc

Gorman, Sanders and Dave Helton redrew the mid-80s logo in 1991 as a tribute to WRKO/Boston’s logo from the late 60s.

WMJI hadn’t even used the calls in their branding from 1998 onward, it has been either “Majic Oldies” or “Majic 105.7”. Lanigan was the only one who kept saying “WMJI Majic 105.7”.

I guess that makes me a "Radio Geek..." :) (y)

A tiny argument could be made that advertisers, consultants, and possibly the corporation itself might care about call's as they are a part of overall identity and reputation. Not to mention reputable disc jockeys who might not think "WRCK" is a good idea for their Country station gig (Just an example, don't know if those calls even exist)

It's kind of the same with television stations which still brand by old dial numbers, yet are lost in the digital or cable era with another number on the remote. I wonder if younger generations even get the purpose, let alone care...

At my age (Mid-Fifties) it's a sometimes asked question (Reunions and "Old friends get together's". "What were M-105's calls"? Odds are more than not that folks didn't know, forgot, and really didn't care. Geek, and lifelong Clevelander knows WWWM. (On occasion we do see M-105 stickers on traffic boxes in this area. And curse the painters who removed the ones we knew were just stripped and painted over. )

More trivial (As that's mostly what I write). With Telemundo (WTCL) now in Cleveland, poor Univision still hangs onto the "Home Shopping" WQHS. I'm sure they have better things to do but wonder why Univision stuck with these for 20 years.

Here in Cleveland we have The Lake, The Fish, The Fan, etc. I don't even know what their call letters are.
The only one I have remote interest in listening to is "The Lake".

WHLK (Since 2011) - I still remember the New Years Stunt and Subsequent rebranding.
WMVX (1997-2011) - A treat when it debuted, for Generation X'er's.
WLTF before that.

True, but most of them no longer use the word "channel".

I don't think Univision really wanted 61, but it was part of the package of stations they acquired. I thought they would eventually sell off 61, but they never did.

Nope.. when i was on air in NW PA... everyone.. advertisers, listeners.. either call us simply.. 97.5 .... or The Hound.

Not many people ever even thought about what our call letters meant unless prodded about it and even then it took them a minute if they even got it right.. despite the obvious meaning to our call letters

The Fish is WFHM, The Fan is WKRK and The Lake is WHLK as mentioned.

Of course, 92.3 has had way more call letters than 106.5 over the years.

Maybe Univision wants to compete with Telemundo in Cleveland. Then again, partnering up with WKYC, WEWS or WJW would be a start for local news.

On the other hand, maybe Univision is still looking for a buyer. Perhaps FOX if Nexstar goes through with buying The CW.

Sorry, that's my 1970's mindset showing up again. :)

Some do refer to themselves as "TV", "News" something or other, or brand by the network and Number.

Always been a mystery. Univision actually outbid Disney for the station so you'd think they'd of had more of a plan. Been here for over 20 years (More than any other 61 variation did. Especially the "Independent" fare.) so they must be doing something they like.

If Nexstar buys the CW, what do you think would happen? Me: (1) WJW losing Fox could be the best thing that could happen to it? (2) CW43 becomes fully independent again and WJW becomes CW?

Sometimes I think WJW feels overcrowded with the little Fox programming it has.

I kind of hoped the appearance of Telemundo here, might kick Univision in the butt towards adding some local programming on 61 (Unless it does plan to become Fox 61??? )

Lets' see:

We have -
The Word (WHKW 1220/96.9)
The Gambler (WARF 1350)
The Answer (WHK 1420/102.5)
The Fan (WKRK 92.3)
The Fish (WFHM 95.5)
The Buzzard (WMMS 100.7)
The Lake (WHLK 106.5)

Me thinks that WJW will eventually become the ATSC 3.0 lighthouse, seeing that they haven't made any effort adding new subchannels or up-to-date encoders. To add to this, it's possible that WQHS will deactivate 61.5 & 61.6 once their contacts for Mystery & Dabl end next year and this year respectively, eventually moving Digi-TV over to 61.4 in the process, and use that available bandwidth to carry 8.1, with 8.2, 8.3 & 8.4 finding new homes on other stations such as WEWS, WBNX & WKYC. WOIO/WUAB are unlikely to carry a WJW subchannel since they're already at full capacity due to their channel-sharing status, and chances are that a SD simulcast of WTCL-LD 6.1 might replace Bounce when it eventually leaves 43.2 for either WVPX or WEWS. This is all just speculation, but we'll have to see what will eventually happen.

Interesting insights. Between this, and whatever happens to W27EA-D it could be an interesting 18 months or so for Cleveland television.

Delayed apologies to all, for turning a radio station(s) thread into a T.V. one.

We did have "The Wave" 107.3 for many years although they announced the frequency quite often.
