Look west cyberdad/radioman148 et. al. , someone in Laurel MT is logging IL/WI right now on sporadic-E skip!
Well I'm not hearing it now, but I'm not surprised. We had major severe weather move through here a short time ago. Hot air moving into the midwest. I've seen/heard this before this time of year.

We had the attack of the supercells here this afternoon. One blew up around Madison and roared its way through Milwaukee Undoubtedly az reaction to me being up in that area earlier this morning...LOL.

Then, a couple of hours later another one came out of nowhere and roared down I-90 from Rockford to the south side of Chicago. That one just scraped our location. Fortunately minimal damage here, but lots of damage south and southeast of us. AT one point the monster was 60,000 feet tall, producing 2-inch hail, and 80 mile wind gusts. Watches and warnings all over, and I was too glued to the TV to think about DXing. :)

I was glued to the TV too. By the time it was over I missed the DX opportunity.

For some reason I am missing all the E-skip lately. Guess I am always at the wrong place at the wrong time.

However after the big storm that rolled through the area I turned on the radio and by 9:30 pm good tropo ducting was in effect. The opening was favorable towards central Illinois and St. Louis. Stayed up until 1 am logging stations , including some new ones.

Woke up this morning and checked out the FM band and the tropo opening was still going on. Got WKYU Bowling Green, KY as a new log. Opening is still going on as I write this, so I will probably be glued to the radio all day. Benefits of working from home.

I even got in on a tiny bit of the fun this morning. At about 9:30CDT, I was in the car and got treated to WBNQ, Bloomington IL, blowing out local LPFM WHRU (Huntley, IL) on 101.5. Distance 133 miles. WIBA-FM (Madison, W, Distance 74 milres) is the usual pest for WHRU. I've heard WBNQ here before here, but not for at least two decades.

In other news....Yesterday (6/13) before sunrise, I caught daytimer WAQE, from Rice Lake, WI pulling an all-nighter on 1090. Fair to weak signal with KAAY nulled. 5kw from 281 miles. Fox Sports and local ads.

Also WOMT from Manitowoc, WI and WTAX from Springfield IL took turns on top of 1240. Each for about ten minutes and with a positive ID. 131 miles for WOMT and 181 miles for WCVS. Conditions on the AM band actually weren't very good, but sometimes that helps stations break through that would otherwise get buried. WOMT was a new catch. I've heard WTAX a few times previously.

UnID Air1 starion on 89.5 FM about 45 minutes ago, was quite clear on my R-108, and mentions of "Air1". Then it just vanished. At the time, the dxmaps.com website suggested I might be getting Texas? (Also, now the map is all fired up, but I've got a meeting that I'm in, go figure)

I miss the days when we could receive tropo on the low VHF TV channels.
Oh yeah, Channel 11 (WLUK-TV) from Green Bay coming in like a local when Chicago's channel 11(WTTW) was off. And my ultimate "canary in the coal mine" for tropo during my college days, KMTV-TV channel 3, from Omaha. Semi-local channel 3, KTVO (Ottumwa, Iowa), would sign off and there would be KMTV....from 250 miles away.

I remember channel 11 from Green Bay. Also channel 3 from Grand Rapids, Mi. And the Milwaukee channels 4, 6, and 12 would come in perfectly during tropo. No snow.

"When in doubt, try your luck on a GY channel". (I just made that up.) So this morning at 5am, I landed on 1490. Two catches within five minutes. Each of which came and went, but stayed long enough for me to catch a positive ID. In order...

WDAN: Danville, IL. Talk. 153 miles
WLAW: Whitehall, MI, Country 127 miles

C. Crane Skywave barefoot

Will do for sure! :)
Didn't you also say you were also on WATK in Antigo, WI (860). If that's true. I'm pretty sure I heard you between tunes one morning a week or so ago. Classic country which went right into local ads, positive ID on top of the channel for 5-10 minutes, then vanished. This would have been a little before 4am CDT.
