Not much to see here. The one thing that jumps out at me is that KNWN is at its lowest since March 2020, though I'm surprised it stayed up in the top 10 as long as it did.

KJEB proves changing your call letters means nothing in the PPM world. Since the change the station has jumped to second in the market. KJR-FM sports still struggling, did better a year ago as just an AM sports station. KIRO-AM still strong especially in the core male demos where they beat KJR-FM three to one. Did notice KNWN drop, maybe the all news cycle driven by COVID is run its course? Station is still solid for an AM signal, with a partial market FM.

KNWN-AM-FM is tied for #10. Not as good as recent books but still OK. The station really shot up the rankings when Seattle had that crazy heat wave with 100+ temperatures a couple of summers ago. And through Covid, it stayed a top station.

I disagree with airing the John Bohannon Show overnight. I imagine management thinks of the show as one that does non-partisan interviews with celebrities and authors. That used to be what Bohannon was about. But in recent years, it's become more about right-wing politics. And now that Bohannon is taking time off, his replacements are often only interested in right-wing politics. An all-news station should NOT do that. All-news KRLD Dallas, to save money, runs Dave Ramsey and Our American Stories in late nights, no politics. If there are no non-political syndicated shows available, KNWN-AM-FM should just run automated news.

Even Ramsey gets political at times; hard for him not to as he discusses macro fiscal policy. He is also an Evangelical Christian and pretty wildly pro gun. These themes will wander into his show fairly regularly. Shake a tree, get a right wing talk show host.

I know it seems like years ago in these pandemic times, but the freak heat wave was in late June of last year. So slightly less than a year ago.

But that's who's left listening to AM. White males 55+ that know if you want to hear that kind of political talk associated with "news", it's on the AM band.

And it's expected to occur again sometime this summer.

Heat?? In Seattle? BAH! It's going to be in the 100's here this week.

  • Fri 17 102°/74°
  • Sat 18 103° /76°
  • Sun 19 104° /77°
  • Mon 20 102°/66°

Maybe it's just me, but keep an eye on KPLZ. IMO, this could be the most disjointed the station has ever sounded. It's a confusing mess.
Wondering how patent Lotus will be with this station.

Heat is relative: this week, at my home in the Palm Springs market, our home weather station registered 118°. That's lots less than last year's high of 124°, though.

The changes only happened six months ago, I'd give it another six months to a year. If they do go all Christmas in December as they have the past few, then we might see some changes in January.

While I disagree with Mark's comments, I think we'll see KJR move back to 950 in a couple years if ratings stay where they are, likely reversing the AM half of the changes with something new on 93.3. There is history for this, The Game started out on 95.5 in Portland before moving to 750. That brand is still there, and holds its own while 95.5 does well as a CHR. Right now though, it's too soon to speculate about that though. I give KJR until the end of 2023 on 93.3.

I think that KJR is here to stay on 93.3. iHeart has no other format for 93.3 that would justify the frequency being used for anything else, and sports talk is still a highly sellable format from a marketing standpoint. The only way I could see them reversing this decision is if Hubbard and Audacy suddenly decided to flip their country music stations to some other random format, but the likelihood of that happening is virtually nonexistent.

We’re seeing great consistency here from KJEB as well. I sound like a broken record (but I will say it again), KJEB is one of the best stations in the market from a programming standpoint. The playlist sounds great (and actually DOES have good variety, particularly on the weekends), and they use high quality talent. Using Martha Quinn for the midday slot was a good choice, even if it is tracked out of San Francisco from KOSF. There will always be iHeart complainers out there, but Seattle is lucky to have a classic hits station that is fun to listen to compared to other markets they are stuck with Audacy’s lacklustre approach.

Of course they will stay on 93.3Mhz. It's silly to think that one low 6+ book is going to make them change back to...what? Urban CHR? Give me a break. As has been explained many times here: sports doesn't live or die by the ratings, let alone ridiculous 6+.

Why, because of published 6+ numbers? That's funny.

That's not at all what I said. Quit being an obnoxious jerk.

I was a big advocate of moving KJR's sports programming to 93.3 FM and still am. Cutting off access to the programming on AM 950 so quickly was a completely unnecessary move, however.

Sports radio on FM in Portland didn't fare all that great, as mentioned earlier, but that is a market with only one major league pro team (sorry, I refuse to count Major League Soccer). Seattle is a very good sports city, and I think long-term doing All Sports on FM makes a lot of sense.

Weren't you one of the individuals who scoffed at the notion KUBE was underperforming?

You were intimating that because of poor performance in one book, (6+ numbers) that iHeart made a wrong decision. That opinion wouldn't be based on any actual facts or proper data. You only think I'm obnoxious, because I identified your observation as being completely wrong? Got it.

Did you ever think that maybe the consultants had data that you don't have? Like; don't let listeners hang around on AM. Get them to switch sooner than later? I'm sure whatever research identified there would be a transition period. I'm also pretty sure any transition period wasn't concerned with maintaining 6+ published numbers.

Other than the Jailblazers, Portland is a smaller market with less professional and college teams to broadcast or talk about. LIke comparing apples with figs.

Seattle seems willing to support two sports talk stations for the long haul.

BigA, David, and I have already explained many times what has happened to CHR stations everywhere. No need to repeat it again and again because you weren't paying attention.

Yeah, let's repeat it again, though.

CHR stations of any type, whether traditional, Churban or Uban hit formats, all have several issues to deal with:
  1. Many songs can't be broadcast due to profanity. Editing, to listeners, is a cop-out.
  2. Many listeners go to streams where they can hear the songs radio can't play.
  3. The younger the demos, the more likely that streams are a first choice.
  4. The salable core of CHR, though, is not teens and 18-21. It is adult women, and most of those stations have remained solid there.
  5. The CHR format, going back decades, is very subject to the quantity, quality and "hittyness" of new releases. Many industry pundits have opined regarding poor production in the last two years. Because most CHRs are about 80% or more current and recurrent, this is a major issue when added to my points one to four above.

Sports is also a significantly seasonal format. The seasonality varies by market.

However, those numbers for KJR-FM are pretty bad, even outside of prime Seahawks talk season.
