Radio One

Urban One has said it wants to get more “general market” stations. I'm sure it has its eyes open for potential acquisitions in all of its existing markets, including DFW. The question, however, is who it could buy? Pretty much all the general market stations are owned by iHeart, Cumulus, and Audacy, and they wouldn’t appear to be looking to sell. Plus, it would seem to be interested in acquiring existing properties, not launching new formats.

There was a rumor that Urban One was interested in Cumulus, but, with it buying disgruntled shareholders out after rejected the Connoisseur offer, Cumulus wouldn’t seem to be too keen on selling.

They might start with a few of their own stations, and I'm thinking of perennial basket case KROI here in Houston. Their only attempt at a general market format was a horrifically expensive all-news format a decade ago, which fizzled after three years. I'm sure they could come up with something that would garner much better numbers than the current old-skewing Praise format, if they would think outside the usual Urban One wheelhouse. A fully voicetracked jukebox would be a welcome addition if it provided a unique format to the market.

One possibility: I keep wondering if Estrella Media might get out of the radio business, and concentrate on their TV network and local TV stations, as well as TV production. Problem is that their DFW and Houston FM stations are all rimshots, so perhaps not an attractive target.
