May Chicago Ratings

Look how awful WLS is performing in 6+; wouldn't surprise me if they have no higher than a 0.4 or 0.5 share in 25-54!

It's not a 25-54 format to begin with.

And yes, they had a 0.4 in that demo in April. They wobble from a 0.4 to a 0.8, all of which are in the margin of error region for stations below a 1 share.

Certainly in Chicago that programming doesn't register well with 25 to 54 year olds! Thanks for the info.
It does not register particularly well in any market. Even one of the best performing similar formatted stations, KFI, is 22nd in LA in 25-54.

The format fares well in some small and medium markets, but I definitely see your point regarding PPM markets.

All news/talkers in markets that "went PPM" saw the same thing: shorter listening spans by existing listeners and few, if any, "phantom cume" listeners to add to the station's AQH levels.

"Phantom cume" was a term we developed in the diary era when talking about secondary preference stations that a diarykeeper often did not bother to write down, but which amounted to considerable listening for P2, P3 and beyond stations.

For readers not familiar with the terms, a "P1" listener is the one who gives a station its first preference... the one they listen to the most. A "P2" is a station they listen to, but not as much as the P1 station. And so on. In the PPM world, the average meter-carrier hears 6 stations a week, and even more if the time frame is expanded.

In the diary, seldom do we see anyone listening to more than 2 to 3 stations.

I would guess that News/Talk stations that really dominate their market, such as WSB Atlanta and WLW Cincinnati, get decent 25-54 numbers. But those are rare. WSB, which identifies itself by its FM dial position, "95.5 WSB," has a strong news department and does all-news in AM drive. WLW is talk during the day but lots of sports nights and weekends. WLW is the home of the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals.

At one time there were more of these AM powerhouse stations that drew younger listeners over from FM. But no more. Stations like KDKA Pittsburgh, WCCO Minneapolis, KOA Denver and KMOX St. Louis are either out of the top 10 or barely hanging on in the overall ratings.

WSB is 10th to 12th in 25-54, depending on the book. WLW is 6th, mostly due to the sports shows in the evening and weekends as well as the play by play.

KFI is 21st in a three-book average in LA in 25-54. It is, though, 8th in men in that demo.

What are some of the top billing music formated stations in Chicago
In order
WTMX
WVAZ
WKSC
WOJO
WBBM (FM)
WLIT
WGCI
WDRV
WUSN
WXRT

Note that #1 bills twice as much as #10.

The station performs OK, so probably not.
It's 19th in billing. Very marginal for a Hancock or Sears tower facility. Only WFMT and WCHI do worse.

The best candidate for revision would have been WCHI, but in the last 4 to 5 months it is up to 6th in 25-54, while it was 17th as recently as last November. So that one is a definite success now and will improve billing accordingly.

I too am wondering why WLS-AM doesn't change their format, unless the corporation feels the 'message' is more important that profit.
