WHK's 100th Anniversary Party

I attended WHK-AM1420's 100th ANNIVERSARY PARTY. This event was held at the Harry Buffalo in North Olmsted. The place was packed and noisy. A few people commented approvingly of my "PragerU" cap that I wore. On this hot day, I wore my most comfortable T-shirt (of which I bought two) which happens to be the "Stand Up For Betsy Ross" T-shirt from the Rush Limbaugh Show, an item his store sold when there were some people trying to cancel Betsy Ross and her U.S. flag. Even though Rush was never part of WHK, a couple of people noted it and in one case, it brought back memories.
I bought a VIP ticket, so I ended up with two meals. Before the main show, they played snippets of sound from WHK radio's past, including from their Top 40 days when they brought The Beatles to Cleveland. The highlight of the event was a band playing Beatles songs, and songs the Beatles covered. All of the songs played were done well. It was loud, as you would expect, but not ear shatteringly so. Therefore, it was a pleasant listen for all. In the band was Bill March who, a couple of years ago, put out a CD with an excellent version of the song "American Noise" on it. This song, was originally done in 1987 (or so) by the local/Ohio band American Noise. Bill March's version was played a lot on WBWC. He remembered that. I met his very friendly son too. I'm glad I went.

I was thinking about attended, but I figured it would be packed and noisy, I wish they would have selected another venue.

They had a venue in downtown Cleveland selected, and paid for. The venue was happy to have them. Then, the venue visited the WHK website after which they cancelled WHK because they didn't like the stations Conservative talk. Another case of cancel culture.

Who is still around from WHK's history? Probably not very many.
Only two surviving names strike me from the Country days.

Chris Taylor: She hosted the evening show (early 1980's), and eventually left (I heard to Arizona, but couldn't confirm) before the station went "14K". I thought I heard her on the Mansfield Country station (WNCO 101.3 FM) possibly in the early nineties.

Dan Coughlin: Briefly co-hosted the morning show after Gary Dee got axed. (The story of how Coughlin was offered that job, had been mentioned by him on a few talk shows after. As he was previously just a "One minute" Sports commentator for the station.)

I stopped listening to WHK in early 1983 when KS100 offered a sharper "Country" playlist and less commercial's. I kind of wondered who carried over from the Country to "14K" rebranding.

Tim Taylor did news reports on WHK in the late 60s before moving to TV.

Carolyn Carr was at WHK I think during the country era. Not sure if she is still around.

Carolyn was also at WHK on and off during their Solid Gold Rock & Roll days, and also did some stints at Magic 105. Usually overnights or weekends. Definitely a voice for radio and a body for TV!
