JON MCDANIEL DEPARTS C89.5 SEATTLE AFTER 32 YEARS AS PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Jon McDaniel was one of the people who gave the dance format to Seattle Audiences over the past 3 decades.

After 32 years as Program Director at Nathan Hale High School Dance “C89.5” KNHC Seattle, today is Jon McDaniel’s last day at the station.

McDaniel took over the programming reins of the station in May 1990 after previously being one of the station’s student DJ’s in the mid 80s. He would oversee the station’s transition to Dance in the 1990s as it carved out a unique niche in the radio industry but for high school stations as well.

KNHC will pay tribute to McDaniel’s career at 2pm on Friday as part of a two-hour special hosted by Operations Manager Drew Bailey and DJ/instructor Harmony Soleil spotlighting his contributions to the station and the dance music community.

Some history about KNHC. It started in the early 70's and was run by high school students with an adult advisor. I was the so-called "Station Manager" in 1977. Of course, the adult advisor at the time was teacher Larry Adams. My job was completely ceremonial as I had no real power. But it gave me experience to go on to a great management career in radio. Without KNHC, I probably would not have had a successful radio career.

I understand KNHC has evolved into a radio station that attracts listeners from around the world. Back in my day, we just covered the north end of Seattle, and even that offered little listenership. But OMG, what a great way to move into a radio career, one that lasted until I retired a few years ago. Thank you KNHC.

There are others on this site that experienced the same. I'm sure they will chime in here...

Ok. I get it. Let me try again with more exact language.

My time at KNHC in 1976-77 allowed me to move up in the commercial broadcast industry pretty quickly, starting in ‘78. For that, I am grateful. Major market at 20, PD at age 30. Probably not ready for either but KNHC experience helped.

MUCH love and respect to him. John is a saint in local radio and has been one the biggest supporters of local talent. Helping to train, educate and mold future broadcasters. Not to mention C89 helped to break LOTS of new music. I for one am thankful for him, his passion and his talents and salute him on a job MORE than well done!!!
