KNX-AM transmitter maintenance last night

I guess I missed this last night on their Facebook

The KNX News 97.1 FM simulcast on 1070 AM is getting some upgrades from midnight to 3 a.m. You can listen to us anytime, anywhere. Stream online, download the Audacy app, or tell your smart speaker, "Play KNX News."

I miss everything that a station chooses to announce on Facebook, because even before all the crap on it, I chose not to "do Facebook".

I think any company that considers Facebook to be critical to their success will end up less than completely successful.

"Upgrades" as to what?
 
I think any company that considers Facebook to be critical to their success will end up less than completely successful.

I don't see anything that says they consider "Facebook to be critical to their success." They simply use social media (the post was duplicated on Twitter and other sites) to let people know what's going on. What would you prefer them to do? Buy an ad in the LA Times? How many people would see that?

Well, to answer your question ... I would, because the digital version of the Times that I subscribe to literally duplicates the print edition, page by page.

But I think the signal-to-noise ratio on pretty much all social media is getting worse and makes social media far less useful as part of a marketing strategy, your sarcasm notwithstanding.

But getting back to what you said, how critical is what happens after midnight to the success of the station?

Before social media, stations would just sign off and do what they had to do. Now they can at least inform people what they're doing. But it's not in any way critical to their success. Whether or not you personally are aware of what they're doing is not critical to their success. Social media is not critical to their success. What happens between 6AM and midnight is critical.

quite the opposite... would i say critical to success? no, but a very very important tool in a stations arsenal today @K.M. Richards .. it works very well and is very useful for 2 stations im directly involved in

Using social media to post things like "hey, we'll be off the air on the AM for maintenance, tune to the FM" is useful (especially for media like Twitter). But there is an increasing number of people who have shut down their Twitter accounts due to the noise ... although limiting who you follow cuts down on that, the retweets can still drive one nuts. And there are people who either tried Facebook and didn't "like" it (pun intended) or found it non-useful 🖐 and those people aren't going to get your social media messages.

In the long run, business is probably going to realize that social media is a big, fat mess.

I think what is going on here is the OP just noted that the transmitter is down and used social media to make people aware of it so they can use alternative methods to listen if they are so interested. I cannot fathom what the "problem" with that would be.

You used that as your cue to post completely off-topic your strong personal views against social media. This thread is not about social media. They are not taking out an ad in the LA Times just to make sure they reach non-conformists like yourself who get the Times reprinted for them page by page.

But since we are going off topic, who really reads the Times anymore anyway? For years we only subscribed because they had a decent sports section, but when that went away, well, so did we.

Sounds like the Times has discovered what radio companies already know about sports in LA.

For me, the Times has pretty solid coverage of the business of Hollywood. That's usually what I read.
 
I'd rather know how many KNX listeners actually read the station's Facebook page.

More then you'd think... Even *I* have been surprise wit5h FB viewership/readership at some of the stations I've worked at.. ive been dealing with FB and radio together for 10 years (in radio) for 20.. and seen what a useful tool it is. .and how much its used.. i nfact, after 18 months here.. i JUST started an online morning news updated that's published online in a few places, one being FB

Since you like calling people out for hijacking threads, I have a challenge for you.

Go talk to this guy, who hijacks every thread that even mentions KPBS in San Diego, or any PBS station in California, or even a San Diego cable company, and then posts hysterical love letters about the station, with mangled syntax, run-on sentences, and includes graphics that are either unrelated to his post or are so badly cropped they cannot be read.

At last count, he was up to 110 posts ... all but his absolute earliest about how much he loves KPBS (and even then, he was pleading for schedule posts that included it).

Until someone does something about him, I refuse to accept any criticism when I go off on a tangent.

Answer: Nearly every over-80 white male who was born in the LA area.

K.M.... we have a built in solution for you which is the ignore option. Only Frank and I as moderators can not allow ourselves to ignore a poster some might find to be pests. Everyone else can choose to exclude those they find annoying or perpetually irrelevant.

Oh, I have him on ignore, all right. I just don't think he should abuse his posting privileges that way.

Of course, as Dennis Miller used to say, that's only my opinion ... I could be wrong.

With all due respect, the poster you linked to is not doing anything wrong. He’s not harming or abusing anyone or anything. Therefore, no one needs to do anything about him. Calm down.

I'm not hysterical and do not need to be told "calm down". You are not my mother, okay?

However, I maintain that with people like that poster around, I do not have any motivation to accept criticism from you and others like you. Again, you don't get to treat me as if you were my parent.
