105.9 not doing it BIG in South Florida

Per the latest beauty contest ratings, BIG 105.9 has slid to a 2.2 from a 2.3. Just 0.1 ahead of CHR Power 96 and 0.3 ahead of AC 93.9 MIA (!!!) and Alternative 104.3 the Shark (another !!!). And BIG is losing the cume race to MIA and Ritmo.

Sorry rockers, Miami is not the place to flaunt your devotion to Metallica.

Actually, 105.9 doesn't play Metallica nearly enough, in my opinion. :)

The eclectic playlist might have gotten a bit too wide texturally for the station's own good. Will be interesting to see if 105.9 diminishes spins for certain song categories given its unfavorable ratings streak of late. Perhaps 105.9 will take a page out of the books of WZLX Boston or KRFX Denver.

We're not a Rock market. We're more Rhythmic, Easy Listening, Adult R&B, and maybe EDM (thanks to the nightclubs in SoFlo) than many folks may realize.

I wonder who thinks of Miami as a place filled with rock fanatics. Granted, I don't have BIG expectations for 105.9, but given that they are almost the only game in town for rock music, rock fans would coalesce to the station by default. And they used to have higher ratings with practically the same playlist approach they are doing now.

The market is getting more and more Hispanic as well as African American and Afro Antillean. None of those groups is particularly attracted to any kind of rock.

In Puerto Rico Alfa Rock after nearly 40 years in the format and several decades of declining shares and revenue sold out to the K-Love and Air1 folks to pay off debts. That gives a bit of an idea of how rock does with people from the Caribbean basin.

And even among the few remaining older non-Hispanic whites, the mood in Miami is just not "right" for rock.

David is right. Just look at WHDR 93 Rock. It only lasted for 5 years while the current format on 93.1, WFEZ Easy 93.1, has lasted twice longer than that and is still going as one of the market's top-performing stations.

Just like EZ came in as a softer alternative to Lite there is a hole opening for a softer version of EZ by yet another station. I know I'll get laughed at for this one, flame away!

Patterned after The Dove in Tampa EZ was older and "lite-er" in its first years. But it did not do well and Cox discovered that there was not a big community of 65 and over non-Hispanic white folks in Miami any more. They started researching among Hispanics and more accurate demos and are typically in the top 3 stations in 25-54 now.

And then WDUV became practically a pop-leaning classic hits station, maybe just short of being called "classic hits".

WFEZ's success is not something to ignore, especially if they are doing far better than classic hits WMXJ, including in the money demos.

Big had cut back on the classic rock staples for about a year in favor of more rock from the 80s and 90s and I found myself listening more during that time. They recently started adding back the usual Zeppelin/Hendrix/Rush etc. and I'm just not as into it.

I couldn’t agree more, they had kinda morphed into
Everything that rocks and is now back to classic rock

Easy listening? WFEZ started out close to that and evolved into something completely different.

Yes, but Easy Listening is what gave the station its name and became one of the most popular stations in the market. I guess this market was craving for it and it worked.

Yes, they failed to succeed thinking that the format they had in Tampa on The Dove would work in Miami. South Florida decades before had ceased to be where retirees went, and it took them several years to realize that.

As soon as they figured out that they needed to research the Cuban immigrant community, they became a top 3 radio station.

Only after they abandoned the easy listening approach of WDUV did the station succeed. They learned enough that they changed WDUV, too. They spent about 3 years failing before they woke up to the demographics of the market.

WDUV had spent more than a decade being #1 in 12+ but around 15th in revenue as most of the audience was over 55... in fact, mostly over 65. They changed and now they are in the top 5 in billings and also very very strong in 25-54.

But the biggest group of WFEZ listeners is Cuban-Americans... something that can't be replicated in any other market north of Miami.

They also promoted the crap out of it with TV ads. Always helpful.
Much of the promotion was when it launched. It did not work, as the station was targeting the long-gone retirement community listener. Once they researched and started targeting Miamians, both Anglo and Hispanic, they moved up into the top couple of stations.
