Oh, WOW - June 6+

I know...I know...it's just Old Farts listening, but ya gotta tip your fez to what The WOW Factor has done. Number two, 6+. Having gone from a 4.5 to 6.2 in the last three monthlies. Radio Industry News, Radio Show Prep, Radio Promotions, Radio Station Data, Podcast News

School's out for summer...but the geezers are lovin' this rim-shotter and its East Valley translator.

Obviously, a significant amount of the over 55 crowd have found this station. Now it's up to the sales folks to monetize it. Here's where David stops in to say "Can't be done". Too old, too hard to make a sale, ad agencies want hip young demos, etc... The conundrum that can't be solved. Old listeners vs No listeners...

Yep, missing out on all those ads for Medicare supplements, Jitterbug phone, hearing aids (would that even work on radio?). Heck, they could even steal all those hair growth and erectile dysfunction spots from KFYI

Everyone always says the only way for a station to get great ratings is to have live & local talent.

Name all the local DJs on this station.

Ad agencies don't "want" anything. They follow the marketing orders of their clients, and clients want younger demos to be marketed to. There are plenty of very sound reasons too.

CBS has been on a nearly two decade crusade of president-to-president meetings to try to get major advertisers to look at 25-64 instead of just 18-49 in TV. They have not been very successful. If CBS can't do it a local oldies station can't either.

There may be enough local direct business for such a station, as with the big numbers it will get results, particularly at the retail level. But the numbers should mean that those that advertise get business out of it and if there are enough of those clients out there, the station will be moderately profitable on very low expenses.

There is a lot more than that. Seniors are less likely to do home repairs, so everything from A/C services to landscaping to kitchen and home remodeling to travel to auto servicing, tires and RV rentals are legitimate business opportunities.

If anyone says "restaurants" I will scream!

Many may say that, but not all. Does this station have any on air talent local or otherwise? Maybe people like an Oldies jukebox without jock banter. Who knows.

When Sebastian pitched this WOW idea, he said over 55 demos were an untapped gold mine. After a very rocky beginning, the ratings are now solid. The sales piece is a different matter. If they figure that out, they've succeeded...

92.3 was all about "live & local" before they wanted to be the flagship for beans & rice - now, the only local is mornings & drive time home from work. (Sure as heck ain't weekends when everyone's gone home.)

103.9 - before 93.3 flipped to "alt"-mold, also did the live & local gimmick, though in 103.9's case, it was more about "independent."

Perhaps Sebastian and others took their cue from KAHM, 102.1??? They have been on the air now for more
than 40 years with the same kind of music. Maybe they haven't made trillions over those years but they
have been successful enough to keep the lights on, the music playing and providing income to staff......

No. None at all. That's my point.

That wasn't the question. The #2 station in Phoenix has no DJs. Is that a problem? Because if it isn't, then why have them at other stations?

No one's talking about the lack of DJs at all. But if a local talent gets replaced at KMLE or KTAR, it's a major catastrophe. There, the owners are cheap and killing radio. Why is KOAI getting a free pass on this, when no other station in town does?

I've noticed that the 6+ numbers for KOOL-FM have been on the rebound lately. Curious if they're showing the same improvement in 25-54. Was it just a Nielsen anomaly for the previous bad books for them? Maybe @DavidEduardo could shed some light on that, and any improvement in 25-54.

One size does not fit all. The WOW station is pursuing older demos that are deemed undesirable. They may have no budget for announcers.

Many listeners probably find DJs annoying when they have nothing to offer. Yapping about their personal lives is of no interest. However, jocks that can talk about musicians or offer something worthwhile is another matter. It also depends on the format. Some JACK formats did OK without announcers. That's sort of what WOW is...

That's not the point. It's the #2 station in Phoenix. Would the station's budget have any influence in whether or not you listen?

What is the point? Is being #2 in ratings worth anything anymore? Are you saying no jocks are the reason the ratings are good?

I personally wouldn't listen to WOW. There's nothing there I need to hear anymore. The ratings seem to say that SOMEONE is listening. They obviously don't care about the station budget. They just like the music...

Sing along with me: Toffifay, its too good for kids, Toffifay, its made for grown-ups..

Aint got jocks at the Coyote, and they do well in marketable demos.

SiriusXM has taken a broadside at terrestrial radio, telling listeners not to waste their time with AM/FM radio. Of course the NAB is up in arms, claiming radio is local and the primary source for emergency notifications. Ohhhh-kay. Aside from KTAR, who else has a news operation at night or on the weekend?

Man, it's getting harder for Nurse Jeff and me to know if it's raining where you are!

The big gripe on these boards is about stations who use VT or out of market talent. Maybe the answer is just play music.

It's not the 50s. You really only need one 24/7 news operation. I bet if big news happens, KJZZ will break in with coverage.

It's only a catastrophe for the guy who loses his gig. Radio people tend to think they're more important than they really are. The days when jocks were relevant are long gone...
