Australia tests DRM on AM and FM


I knew in some countries DRM have been used for years. Now Australia is joining this where their signals are on DRM during one of their tests.
The only really significant proponent of DRM other than for SW is India where there are no private AM stations and they have plenty of frequencies to use for replication of AM formats on DRM signals.

DRM works nicely if the band is pretty empty and it is just the government that controls all frequencies for its own use. For that reason we will not see it in the Western Hemisphere.
 
Why would it work on SW and not on AM? The SW band may be emptier than it once was but the signals aren't exactly robust or noise-free. I should think AM (MW) groundwave signals would be a more reliable use of the technology in a station's local coverage area, even if the band is more crowded at night.

First, until DRM appeared all Short Wave, Medium Wave and Long Wave was AM. AM means Amplitude modulation and is a form of modulating an RF signal at any frequency.

Medium Wave has propagation advantages over the FM band and that is exactly why India is deploying DRM on Medium Wave (531 to 1697). Rather than building hundreds of FM transmitter sites, they can do high power transmission from fewer sites on the MW band, covering at least one or more states and divisions.


Note that they broadcast mostly in the 100 to 300 kw range although there is one megawatt station. Each DRM station has an AM station 9 kHz removed from its frequency.

The AIR domestic DRM stations that Mr. Eduardo is referring to is their domestic MW network. They also have Indian made DRM MW radios that are available for the Indian domestic market as well.

And, per reports, the cost of those radios is low and, apparently (based on some confusing articles) subsidized by AIR through government incentives granted to manufacturers.
