Processing With A BW Transmitter And DBX Compressor/Limiter

The Auto light is on in the photo of the DBX, telling me it is running in the Auto mode for Attack/Release. And it is stereo coupled so the second channel settings have no affect. The ratio is set 4:1 and the Peak stop is set way to high, the peak stop light should not be on all the time. The peak stop light should flash with peaks, compression is on the high side going into 15.

No rocket science settings here. From what I see the processor is crunching the audio more than you need and taking away from the dynamic range.

It's fine to run the DBX in Auto mode, stereo coupled, 4:1 ratio is fine. 8 Db of compression going into 10 is OK. Peak stop set to flash on peaks, but should not be on solid, 50-70% on most of the time is OK. If I remember right Peak stop and output level interact. The DBX should be used for gentle almost AGC processing.

Radio people aren't the listener's we serve. Assuming that intentionally altering the dynamics to sound something out of the Drake Chenault days appeals to radio people, doesn't have the same appeal with your audience.

D-C didn't employ EQ or compression on their tapes. They went to great lengths to deliver master-grade audio. If the client wanted to over-process it, then that was their call.

If you ever saw the processing of KHJ and KRTH from the 70's era, you'd know what the end result was. Famous, of course, was the processing rack with a tinted glass cover door with a lock!

Dense audio, Big complicated thing. I remember setting the station here on dense/loud (New York - Omnia.9) processing. It surely sounded awesome on first 24 hours of listening. On the other day everything was bad... even made me have a headache. I prefer to push final clipper louder and decrease amount of compression/AGC leveling speed. the transients should push the loudness way higher.

When was this? Aggressive processing drives down TSL.
