GSP monthly ratings

This last month’s book saw a bit more change than normal. WROQ moved up to the #2 spot. This was a rough one for iHeart. Country on 100.5 in third place down almost a point, Classic country on 92.5 is down to a 4 and a half share, The Lake at a 4, and their sports talker, a C3 FM, registered a 0.1 share and has translators beating them 5-10x. The Fan barely did any better, but they’re a bit weaker signal wise.

I’m surprised at how WHZT beats WFBC almost consistently now, especially considering rhythmic CHR is not a very strong format in a lot of markets these days. CHR has gotten rhythmic to the point where there isn’t a huge difference other than the mainstream pop on CHR that most rhythmics avoid.

106.3/WORD is down a whole point…guess a lot of the angry old white conspiracy theorist men were out of town. I’m not sure if 94.5 is as wacko as Tara, Charlie, and company, but everything I’ve heard on there is sleep inducing. Not necessarily a fan but Hannity is probably the most vibrant personality on there. At least 106.3 can get entertaining.

In the case of WHZT, it’s because WHZT sounds more modern, fresh, and well sexier than WFBC has been in years. Sure WHZT may not have a stronger signal but they sure sound like a 2022 radio station. Meanwhile WFBC sounds like their still stuck in 2005. Just my observation and opinion.

1063/WORD is losing its punch. They endorsed that old gasbag Joe Dill for the umpteenth time and he lost lol. In fact a lot of those old Greenville County Council gasbags lost their county council seats in the primaries and run offs this past month. Some of them like that Ellen Weaver lady or the America’s Got Talent singer are completely unqualified lol but that’s another story for another time. I noticed when Tara gets her way she’s actually at a loss for words thank god. 🤣

I agree that WFBC does sound tired…honestly, it’s never been a great CHR. It’s always sounded 5-10 years older. I’ve noticed Audacy seems to have improved the adds where the songs they add are most likely to be hits.

The only complaint I have with WHZT is there are certain songs WFBC plays that they should be playing as well that are massive hits with their target audience. I wish they’d switch from Rhythmic CHR to Rhythmic leaning CHR.

What do we do without fake outrage?

I was just listening to WBRF "Classic Country 98.1" in Galax, VA and the DJ said there were listeners in Spindale. That's impossible!

Gotta disagree on the ‘it was never a good chr’ review. It was on point 95-97. Top notch jocks and production.

Remember, Greenville-Spartanburg is not a PPM market so the "monthly" releases cover the last 12 weeks, not just the last 4 as in PPM.

I wasn’t around to hear that unfortunately (a bit young lol) - but I have heard Hawk and Marty were much better than Hawk and Tom so I can believe that.

I wonder if Audacy is taking note of what 98.1 is doing that obviously works, on a less than great signal compared to 93.7? I haven’t really heard them change anything musically in response, and on average 98.1 has been beating them for a while.

I have heard that as well. Hawk and Tom sound like old fuddy daddies with a radio show that sounds like it was last relevant in 2005.

Latest numbers. Not a lot of change, Hot is still ahead of B. WYRD seems to be steady around a 4 share now. Nice showing for X-98.5.

I’ve often wondered where WLFJ places. 89.3 is in 6th place and WSHP at 103.9 gets around a 1 share.

At the bottom we have 104.9 Fox Sports Upstate with a 0.1 share. That’s as close to not showing as possible. Nobody is listening just like nobody is following their social media accounts

Interesting to see WLFJ resurface as well looks like they were steady earlier in the spring before dropping off sharply. In fact it looks like the dog days of summer are here as June’s numbers definitely signal the usual summer slump we’ve seen the last few years.

But definitely good to see a X98.5 bounce back as well for last month.

As for this month well WSPA is supposedly going to do Christmas in July this weekend but there has been zero hype or advertising for it at all like in the past almost you wonder why they, be it WSPA or Audacy are even bothering at all.

Tara and WYRD got some unusual heavy criticism from SC conservatives this past week for Tara’s odd softball interview with William Timmons over the affair allegations the other day…unusual because Tara has spent the last six years ranting and raving against Timmons ever since he first defeated Mike Fair and then Lee Bright. LOL is I all laugh about.

It’s odd that the non-comms showed last month as well as the streams. WEPR’s performance is about what I expected.

The Block seems to fluctuate significantly. I wonder how much it has to do with tropo and other conditions absolutely steamrolling 96.3 in the mornings during certain times unless you’re close in to Greenville. I’m not sure about 104.5 or 107.7 having issues.

I did notice 91.1, 91.5, and 91.9, 3 other non-comms didn’t show. I wonder if their listenership is really that low, or if it’s something else?

Well, it would be helpful if iHeart actually promoted the station. Does anyone even know it's there? This is a pretty big sports town when it come to college. They should be doing better....but I'm not sure what their local content is at this point.

The Fan is local from 12n-7pm (I believe). They do live remotes (often paid, but they at least have some visibility.)

Theres a Facebook and Twitter page for 104.9 but they obviously don’t promote them or promote the station at all. Twitter has around 40 followers and Facebook has 20 after almost a year.

The Fan feels like a better attempt. I feel like The Fan could do better if they had something bigger like the Tigers or Gamecocks, or even the Panthers…Audacy has two of those (as does 105.5) but I highly doubt either party would want those on two weak AM’s and two translators.

If I'm not mistaken, they promote The Fan on the big signals during the games...at least they used to. And, if they aren't doing this already, they should do their own local pre-pregame with the local talent. They are both great in the air. Marc Ryan is actually on CBS Sports with his own show in the weekend.

Maybe one of these sports stations needs to take a look at what works well for WNKT down in Columbia. Of course that station is on the FM dial in a good position and not some crappy C-brand station like WCOS AM is.

I know the Fan at least acquired Furman games a couple years ago, not sure who does Wofford nowadays. Does North Greenville U even have an fan base for their sports teams?

I’ve seen some NGU bumper stickers, but their sports seem to attract as much interest as BJU to outsiders which should be saying enough.

WNKT in Columbia benefits from being the flagship for the Gamecocks with a lot of good local programming oriented toward that and a bigger local sports town. The closest the upstate has to that is The Roar/ 105.5 and 97.5, which is almost all Clemson all the time but has a bit of a signal deficit.

Between The Roar, Fox Sports 104.9 and The Fan the category in the upstate is too crowded. 104.9 has the best signal and has the Gamecocks, but nothing else to draw people in. The Fan has the better local programming, but is signal challenged and lacks any big teams. It’s just going to be tough for any of these to make a huge go of the format unless they can get a team with a fanbase, advertise like crazy, and get some local talk shows (which The Fan and The Roar do have). Nobody knows sports talk on 104.9 exists.

I looked over the July ratings for GSP and not much changed although a lot stations dropped, seem like a lot of listeners were probably on vacation? The biggest loser for the month appeared to be WHZT which flipped flopped once again in ratings with WFBC.

Also WSPA saw zero gains from Christmas in July.
