KCKC FM - Large Playlist Success ?

But what I'm saying is they already do play quite a few songs from the 70s and I've even heard them play Louie Louie by the Kingsman! (From the 60s.)
And for that and perhaps many other reasons the station underbills and is not even in the top 10 despite a very adequate signal.

But soft ac is a viable format for many cities (like Miami). Kckc already plays sister golden hair by America, thunder island, and I'd really love to see you tonight which are staples of soft ac.
Miami does not have a "soft AC". WFEZ started that way and did very poorly, getting mostly 55+ listeners in a market that is no longer a retirement community.

WFEZ dropped the older AC approach and started researching Hispanics and targeting their preferences. When they did that, the station moved up into the top 3 or 4 in 25-54.

Now that's an AC song if I ever heard one...

NOT!!!!

This is a station that does not know if it is AC or Classic Hits... or even Oldies.

I’m blown away, that is extremely impressive. How has KMBZ avoided the fate of being almost exclusively 55+ (aka for “old angry white men”)?
That's a more conservative market, for starters. I have not listened, but suspect it does enough local content to attract more than the "election fraud" loonies.

And could be a reason they're 15th in demo. Playing music outside your demo era is not a winning strategy. An example would be Louie Louie, witch came from the 60's.
Programming a radio station is not like DJ'ing at a wedding. You don't get style points for throwing in odd ball eras of music.

This is a very unique talk station. The local shows are each hosted by a male/female couple. Not angry old men.
Do other primarily local talk stations that are somewhat similar to KMBZ like WWTN, KMOX, WIBC, KFTK, etc tend to get better demos since they’re primarily local? I’m not sure of the content of the shows, but they seem to have younger, local hosts on almost all of the schedule and they’re in generally conservative markets (yes, compared to LA, NYC, and most other top 10 or even 20 markets, KC, St. Louis, Indy, Nashville etc are very conservative).

‘MBZ’s local shows are not entirely politically based either. They do a pretty good job of talking about local issues (their afternoon drive show in particular does this quite well) and water cooler topics, not just political rants.

Yes. Very conservative. The city may be a bit more liberal, but the market as a whole, including the suburbs, skews *very* conservative.
Johnson County's liberal, Jackson County's liberal. The only places I can think of that aren't are the rural areas around it.

Read my last part: “the market as a whole.” I’m well aware both Jackson and Johnson (as well as Wyandotte) lean liberal; I’ve had family that lived on both sides of the state line, including those aforementioned counties. The entire market as a whole skews conservative; election research and trends can prove that.

I don't think local is as important is having the male-female combo that isn't restricted to national politics.

The talk stations that look beyond the same conservative talking points seem to be the ones that get better demos.

I wonder what suburbs are conservative? I've thought just about every suburb Leans left (even in Texas)

To clarify, by “conventional AC” I mean something like WLTW, KOST, WBEB, KODA, etc.

A station following a similar format to KCKC, although different (but does the going back 50 years) and more successful seeming is WKQC in Charlotte. “Southern Cross” and “Why Can’t We Be Friends” on an AC is rather odd.

Probably a station that's a little bit closer to kckc is star 1045 in Omaha, but has a more narrow playlist.

I've read that the ABC TV network was kind of desperate in its early years, up until Batman became a hit in 1966, that desperation led to ABC broadcasting some shows that CBS and NBC wouldn't (I don't have specifics).

Maybe KCKC FM is showing its desperation by playing way out of format songs sometimes, hoping for some kind of breakthrough in the rating/demographics.

Not really. They're more of an adult hits type station and the songs aren't really that out of the ordinary for that format.
