Geo Fencing in LA

Just wanted to know now that royalties are going up any chance that stations will Geo fence their stations.

Two weeks ago, I Heard on Audacy's KBZT, a company announcement that the increase in music royalties will result in the end of local radio. And if you like the station you're listening to, please let your congressman know that you are against the increase, and you want local radio to survive.

No details were given beyond that. So, are they going to shut down radio stations? I doubt it. Or maybe, have one national feed for all their stations? I think it was desperate attempt by Audacy to keep themselves from spiraling further into debt and bankruptcy.

Station groups late to the streaming game are rightfully concerned that music royalty increases would likely splash into radio. I wouldn't make the dire prediction that radio will end over an increase, but it's just another piece of straw placed on the camel's back.

So the question is what will happen to local radio?

They probably will geofence meaning you can only stream in certain areas. David E or hagerty would know More

What you heard was an NAB PSA campaign that some radio groups are running to drive opposition to the RIAA's new performance royalty they want passed in Congress. This has nothing to do with existing royalties that all radio stations currently pay.

The royalty increase mentioned in the OP is a 15% hike in songwriter royalties that strictly applies to digital distribution, such as streaming or satellite.

My take on this is that the big radio companies (iHeart & Audacy) are selling their streaming primarily as a national service. The commercials you hear on their streams are targeted based on your IP address. So they're making money regardless of where you are. Having said that, a 15% increase is a lot, and several companies sued over this increase, and were overruled by the Copyright Royalty Board. In any event, I don't expect the big radio companies to geofence. We already know that KKGO and KMZT geofence.

I agree it's going to be the small operaters impacted the most financially that will end up geo-fencing...or they could charge a small monthly fee to keep their out of area P1 listeners happy. The days of offering free out of area streaming, will probably come to an end.

BTW, the only station I know of so far that charges a monthly subscription fee for streaming is KAHM Prescott, AZ. The are a small operator and one of the last remaining Beautiful Music stations. A big reason for charging, was being unable to handle all the traffic on their server. The monthly fee is $10.
