Latest SA PPMs

From RadioInsight:

Cox Media Group Classic Hits 101.1 KONO-FM slips 8.1 to 7.6 (stream adding 1.3). iHeartMedia AC “Q101.9” KQXT rises 6.9 to 7.2. Cox Classic Rock “106.7 The Eagle” KTKX dips 5.9 to 5.6. Cox Hot AC “Magic 105.3” KSMG rises 3.7 – 4.5 – 5.3. iHeartMedia Country “KJ97” KAJA slides 5.7 to 5.1.

With Alpha Media CHR “Energy 94.1” KTFM flipping to a simulcast of “Sports Star” 1250 KZDC, the station drops 1.6 to 0.6, with KZDC adding an additional 0.2.

The move helps Univision Hip Hop “98.5 The Beat” KBBT to jump up 2.1 to 3.6, while iHeartMedia CHR “Now 96.1” KXXM falls 5.0 to 3.1.

How much longer will IheartRadio keep Latino Hits on 104.5? IMO, Rhythmic Hot A/C(MIA 93.9) or Hot A/C would likely do better than the current format.

Alpha Media- Unless advertisers are flocking to The Sports Star, the format should have remained on 103.3 & 1250.

KISS is No. 7 in SA. I'm happy with that.

I can hear KISS from the extreme north part of Victoria all the way to Boerne.

I wonder if sports will hit on 94.1. I for one, am enjoying having it on the fm dial finally on a pretty strong signal. First for SA. But now looking at these ratings already is not a good sign.

Iheartradio would have placed the format on full FM signal if the research supported it. The same applies to the Tejano format. Univision, the leader in Spanish Radio, moved the format to AM because it was no longer profitable.

Any truth to the chatter that Greg Martin is no longer at Alpha Media SA? If so, this is long overdue.

What chatter have you been listening to? He's very much still the OM at Alpha and PD of KJXK and KTSA.

Before the great translator invasion, it was one of the handful of San Antonio stations you could hear in Austin. It always seemed you could hear more Austin stations in San Antonio than vice-versa. I know there’s a ridge between the two, but it seems to block the San Antonio stations going north more than the Austin stations going south. I’m guessing it goes back to elevation since the West Lake Hills tower farm near Austin is almost 400 feet higher than the northwest and Elmendorf tower farms in San Antonio.

Unless KISS starts playing more Volbeat, The Pretty Reckless, Asking Alexandria, Pop Evil, etc., then I'll start listening to it more. They're probably the only station in America still playing Nickelback every hour like it's 2002.

Not sure how Kiss is still around tbh. Either people here don’t have musical taste or the people running stuff don’t know a damn thing

Most likely both. However, their musical taste is Tejano (nothing wrong with that), and rap with some pop and country. Anything rock is just ancient history which probably explains the Nickelback every hour post I mentioned above. The people at KISS are mad geniuses thinking SA only needs to hear "Down With The Sickness" and the same 90s songs over and over and that's ok because ratings and cume. And if you suggest anything different, you get blocked by Twitter.

No it is not. There has not been a viable Tejano format there for almost a decade. Those who keep trying don't get that the format appeals to people over 45 or 50 or so.

Since the population is over 50% Hispanic, it's worth noting that, while American rock (as well as AC, CHR, etc) is well liked and heavily programmed in Latin America, the preferred artists are not always the same and the big songs may sometimes be different.
Since 90% of San Antonio Hispanics listen to English language radio, stations will research among Hispanics, too. So don't expect the sound of a rock station to be the same as one in Minneapolis.

If you had access to BDS or MediaBase, you'd know that the library is many times the "90" that you suggest.

Does the morning show carry the ratings for 99.5 KISS? The music the rest of the day skews much older than the P1’s for Billy Madison. I’m trying to remember when a wider gap existed in target audience between the morning show and music the rest of the day.

Not sure about how it is today, but, in the diary era, Lisle and Hahn used to carry the station, and it dived the rest of the day. Problem was, when San Antonio became a PPM market, people didn't listen to them as much as they remembered they did.

Bringing in Billy Madison was designed to fix that problem and get KISS out of the 2 share range. I believe the music mix was also tweaked, though I only occasionally listen to KISS (and active rock in general). I haven't seen the in-demo numbers in a long time, but, looking at 6+ numbers, it seems to have worked. Despite people complaining about it here, KISS does reasonably well and is as successful as or more successful than the average active rock station in the country.

KISS dropped all currents the day the Billy Madison show debuted. The playlist is very repetitive and does sound dated, but ratings wise it works. Some of their core artists (Ozzy Osbourne, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Korn) have all released new material recently, but no airplay on 99.KISS.

When KISS played a few currents (pre Billy Madison) the ratings tanked as you said. Unless a competitor comes in and gains traction playing currents or the ratings nosedive again, my guess is the music will largely stay the same.

Kiss might as well be a considered a classic rock station at this point, playing rock from the 90’s-00’s is like a station playing rock from the 70’s-80’s 20 years ago. Actually with the way trends come and go, I can see 90’s and 00’s rock making a come back and Kiss sees a resurgence with a new audience.
