Sunny 99.1 LONG commercial breaks

I decided today while I was driving to listen to the radio for a change. Tuned into KODA-FM “Sunny 99.1” today between 3 and 4PM and they were in a commercial break. Noticed the lack of local advertising. They were running ads which sounded like infomercials for over 5 minutes. This was hard to stomach because I remember how radio used to be prior to 1996 when radio had LOCAL identity.
I ended up changing to AM to KTRH and noticed the biased politics instead of local news , weather etc. I haven’t listened to KTRH in years and it’s a far cry from what they were years ago.
I ended up changing the radio source back to SXM. :(
I’m done venting guys. Hope all of you are well!

All about the almighty dollar, and as awful as the station sounds, KODA rakes in loads of em...

The absolute worst offense I've encountered was a 12 minute stopset on KVDU 104.1 in New Orleans (iHeart). They then played 1 song and went into traffic report and then another 3 minute stop set. The station ironically is called "The Spot"

And no direct competitor to KODA, at that.
Sunny has a fair amount of playlist overlap with The Spot. Major difference is the lack of pop recurrents (Taylor Swift, etc, etc, etc) on 95.7.

I think Sunny regards KSBJ as a major, if not direct competitor as they both target the same soccermom demographics.

Also, the Spot has no more than ten songs after 1999 being played. And whilst that puts them close to Classic Hits territory, the frequent playing of Metallica and Sublime can keep them from being a full-fledged Classic Hits station. (Even rock-leaning Classic Hits stations like WJJK, etc. do not play Enter Sandman often. I do not see the likes of WCBS or WLS play Santeria, either.) That, and less tight rotation/formulaics. And Greggo makes the Spot closer to a rock station than a pop one.

That explains why I heard Jesus Take The Wheel when I sampled KODA 5-7 years ago.

Markets like San Francisco and New York have pop stations (AC, CHR, etc.) up and down the dial. And almost all of them have had substantial success. So the "soccer mom" demographics in Houston can be different.

That alone is likely enough to keep listeners who want to hear '80s pop hits, but don't want to hear Ed Sheeran or Girls Like You. As someone who admittedly falls in the group, I hardly listen to KODA and haven't been able to hear if some of the gaps between songs played in their recently played (such as one song playing at 3:56 PM followed by the next playing at 4:04 PM, which actually happened today: Find the most recently played songs on SUNNY 99.1) or the seemingly long commercial breaks were just mistakes on the website or if they were actually happening. Based on the earlier post about an iHeartMedia station in New Orleans, it seems like they are in fact real. I think it's pretty crazy that KODA is able to get away with so many commercials and still be a top rated station.

Whilst The Spot performs substantially in the ratings, Sunny has remained #1 outside Christmas. Now I'm not sure if Sunny's morning hours are hosted by widely admired local figures, but it could be a factor.

And offices/workplaces are not bribed or held at gunpoint to play Sunny through the radio stations. At least I don't believe so.

Personal taste, I find the presentation awful, but then again I'm a man in my late 20's...
I like the fact that KODA uses Wisebuddah for their jingles, but I'm not sure if I'm a huge fan of their imaging/voiceover guy, at least for a pop station.

While they've never beat KODA in 6+, KKHH actually has beaten KODA on ocassion in 25-54 and 18-49 in the past few years, showing that they can beat them in money demos, although they haven't done it yet this year. And in those demos, while KODA does well and sees time at #1 there, KLTN and KTBZ-FM also see their fair share of time at #1 in 25-54 and 18-49 as well, so them being #1 in 6+ book after book likely has a lot to do with 55+ listeners.

I actually have heard a few stories of people keeping KODA on the radio at work because they don't want their boss to get mad at them, but those cases may be few and far between, so it's tough to say what impact this has on ratings.

Same could be said about AMOR 106.5 I don’t like the imaging Nor the voice over. Seems the same one since Recuerdo, más variedad and now Amor. Same voiceover different name.

That is pretty standard practice in PPM markets now. You want a long commercial-free sweep during afternoon drive when the most meters are out there? You can't just eliminate the commercials, they have to go somewhere, so they go into other commercial breaks in the 6a-7p window. The only difference is where stations decide to squeeze in these long sweeps (starting the workday, lunchtime, ending the workday...)
Here you see where Sunny runs its normal breaks in the 2p hour, goes commercial free in the 3p hour, then has longer commercial breaks pushed back into the second half of the 4p hour. The result is a 90 minute sweep. The calculus willingly sacrifices listening at times where there is less listening (toward the end of PM drive) to increase listening where there is more opportunity.

Wudda what?? That’s the worse part, the jingles they use now.
It’s an iHeart station, I’m not surprised then. The vocals sound like a mouse on speed. The Dallas based jingle companies have quality jingles.

Wisebuddah has been used on many radio stations in Europe, Canada, etc. At least the music production for the jingles sound very modern and crisp.

Not sure if TM is the end all be all; some of their modern-day jingles may sound too bright and/or rushed. And the Brite Lite package for Sunny may be one of TM's weakest.

And has JAM really been used outside of retro jingles?
