Olivia Newton John

Unfortunately I afraid your are correct. I played her songs on country, town and country, chicken rock, and full service AC's stations. IMHO The music in the 70's and 80's required more vocal talent and stronger lyrics than the stuff today. Of course there is a heck of a lot more money in the music business today so something is working.

SiriusXM reported the death of ONJ and directed fans to a couple of channels that "regularly play her music."

However, it will take some time for them and other digital platforms to set up a dedicated ONJ channel due to the music industry. The Digital Millennium Copyright Act has a clause in it that prevents digital channels from playing more than 4 songs by a featured artist per hour. The way around that is to get a waiver from the owner of the music copyright, which might be the record label. Any of the single artist channels have to obtain that waiver before they can launch.

If you adjust for inflation, there was considerably more money in the music business in the 70's and 80's than today. Add in the difference in US population, it is even more dramatic how much music revenue is down.

This is why the labels and artists want to increase the performance royalties and include radio in the payment group.

here in NY - the OLDIES station (well, I think so) acknowledged Olivia's passing - but I checked their playlist - NONE of her songs are on it! what does that tell you????

thank you (BigA) for acknowledging the fact that Olivia started out in country (aside from the headline...)

Realizing with the almost demise of the “oldies” and “easy listening” radio station formats there won’t the kind of radio tributes to her recording career the way there would have been 10 years ago.
Scott Shannon with ‘The True Oldies Channel’ did a nice tribute to her today. My radio partner and I plan on doing the same tomorrow on our local LPFM.

As an Aussie the greatest of thanks to all of you for taking the time to share your memories it just goes to show how much Olivia impacted and influenced so many fields. Grease was a huge part of my childhood and she was often coming back here to Australia as part of her work in the cancer research/awareness area.
