WQMF Flashback

I may be the only one to find this interesting, but check out the variety of WQMF's playlist on June 1, 1984 (credit to Radio & Records Magazine, issue #536). This was the heyday of AOR radio, before playlists tightened and radio became overly fragmented. Imagine 'QMF (or any rock station) playing Cindy Lauper, Duran Duran, and the Go-Go's regularly, in addition to the classic Zepplin, Floyd etc.. But that was normal in 1984.....and they were #2 (out of 14 stations) in the Birch Ratings, with a 12.0. WQMF 6.1.1984.JPG

I couldn't remember Duke Jupiter or Billy Satellite, so I looked them up on YouTube. I found a song from 1984 by Billy Satellite called "I Wanna Go Back." Imagine my surprise when I realized it was the same song later popularized by Eddie Money! I didn't even know Eddie's version was a cover.

And yes, I find looking at old charts very interesting. The music that was played on MTV and AOR stations, as well as the songs that were featured on Miami Vice in the 80s, is very special to me!

The Billy Satellite song was most likely “Satisfy Me”. Didn’t know about the I Wanna Go Back original though. I would listen to QMF while driving back home to Texas; they had a wide playlist. I even heard “Running With the Night” by Lionel Richie on QMF around that time. I did a double take, but other AOR’s played it as well.
