On this same day where many PBS stations including my own station: KPBS in San Diego kicked off the August 1977 Membership Pledge Campaign running Friday August 19th through Monday August 29th!!

So that was the day it started. I just put up the NorCal schedule from three days earlier (the day Elvis died and where I was living then), and KQED had no Pledge Breaks on their schedule.

Maybe it started Saturday August 20th for KQED for 16 days, but for other stations just 11 days!!

I've just checked newspapers.com, and yes, KQED did start their Pledge Week on the 20th.
That's right, during the August 1977 pledge campaign, PBS stations aired encores of the Festival '77 and other past pledge specials like "All Star Swing Festival", "The Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert" and then aired some new Opera Theatre and "Theater in America" specials also known as "Great Performances", then marathons of Five Red Herrings and Madame Bovary, Mel Torme in Concert with Woody Herman, The 1977 Drum Corps International Championships and regular PBS favorites.
