WPHT returns to HD broadcasting

Noticed as of recently that WPHT is broadcasting in HD again. Hearing them in HD up here in Queens right now. Wonder if it's a backup transmitter thing?
 
I first noticed it on as 8/6 and it has been on since. They have no subchannels for now, but I wonder if they will add anything in the future.
 
There is no support for HD subchannels on AM radio.
 
I lived in NE Philly for a few years, around 1992. 1210's stick could be seen out my window across the Delaware, at Cinnaminson NJ.
Being a short-wave hobbyist at times, I was able to mark off spots for 1210 on 2420, 4840, 9680 , etc.
Back then, one of those harmonics could've had more of an audience than 1210 itseld had 30 years ago. HD is not gonna do much for it in 2022.

I used to drive past the 1210 tower everyday in 1994-95 and the vehicle I had back then had a dial radio. 1210 would over power the entire AM band for about a mile radius. Every station from 610 WIP up to 1540 WPGR was talk radio emanating from 1210’s site.

Not a good radio. When I'd be within a mile or less of our Radio 10 100 kw transmitter on 710, the locals on 630 and 790 were easy to hear.
 
It seems Audacy has given up using HD Radio technology on its AM stations. It's gone from WCBS and WINS NYC. I wonder why it's back on 1210 WPHT?

I honestly think it's a backup transmitter they're using and it likely won't be a permanent thing, but I could be wrong.

Correct. It wasn’t a good radio and as I recall the car was even worse. I don’t remember if the tower site affected the FM band but I don’t believe it did. Conversely today, with a much better and more modern vehicle, the towers on Germantown Pike in the business center near Trooper Road knock out other AM signals a few hundred yards east of the site but as soon as I pass them the signal is back so my guess is that whatever signal they’re putting out is directional east. I think that’s WPEN’s site but I don’t know for sure.
