Charleston ratings

Star seems to be near a high for the station ever. Nearly a 12 share. Pretty incredible in this time with things being so fractured.

95SX below a 3 share. That station seems to have gotten stale over the past few years. Mix seems to muddle along around a 2 share for months and months. Without 2 Girls and a Guy that station wouldn’t exist.

Your thoughts?

WFBC in GSP is below a 3 share as well. I think the CHR format is struggling overall, and even more in the southeast where country is a bigger factor.

Has anything even done well on 95.9 since it moved in to the market? Since its original short run with classic hits, it’s been back and forth between Hot AC and Adult CHR formats with limited success.

96.9 is tied with Q - John Boy and Billy are painfully out of place on that station, I wonder how much that affects their ratings? Considering how well AC and adult hits are doing, a classic hits station should perform better. WIWF has a pretty good playlist.

It’s time for the Charleston Radio Group to invest in The Box and put the nail in the coffin for Cumulus. They have the upper advantage to do it but they won’t. Once upon a time, THE BOX was a well put together Urban station before Michael T passed away. Even when they had B92 it was a great CHR. It’s clear to see STAR 99.7 is the bread and butter for the group.

We get the first look in to the Saga stations in a while.

Interesting to note 96.9 The Wolf has overtaken 101.7 Chuck FM pretty solidly and has seemingly cut in to their numbers. I do prefer 96.9 outside of JB&B, probably the best classic hits station in the state right now.

95.9…has this signal ever been successful since coming on the air in the late 00s other than Kickin’? The current based format isn’t doing that great. 95SX is trending up.

Amazing how long 105.5 has stuck with its format.

Need to bring 92.5 The Box back and put Kickin back on 95.9

Kickin is too popular among the community. Plus people still listen on the regular signal. There’s a big difference between 92.5’s signal and 95.9. People in Moncks Corner, St. George and other distant points can reliably get 92.5 when they can’t get 95.9 as well.

Mix has a “cult“ following. The ones that still listen are die-hards. Two Girls and a Guy ARE the station. They’re afraid switching would boost 95SX.

105.5 has been at that format for darn near 20 years. I think the flip was January 2004. The Ravenel wasn’t even open for another 18 months after that. Hard to believe.

I remember when they were a darn good jammin’ oldies format in the early 2000s. They even hired John Majhor from Toronto.

Dang, my understanding is AAA attracts a lot of 55+ listeners so I wonder what the demos are like. There’s obviously something that’s kept it going for 20 years. There was another AAA that launched around the same time I think, the long gone Alice 100.5.

WYBB is doing rather poorly also. Seems like most rock listeners are listening to Q104.5.

New ratings came out a couple days ago and country doing really well in the market all of a sudden. Both WEZL and Kickin. All those country shows at Volvo Car Stadium can’t hurt. They have their 18-49s on lockdown.

94.3 really floundering. Can’t recall the last time they were below a 3 share. The Rush listeners are all gone.

We are very due for another format flip. All we’ve had in the last 6-8 years is 96.9 to classic hits, and that was 4 years ago.

What about 98.9,? They haven't been doing too great either.

Kirkman has had a sports station pretty much their entire time since they bought 1340 back in 1994. Multiple stations most of the time.

They have the Carolina, Clemson and Citadel rights on their stations so they do make money. They have let The City go for 5 years even though it never gets above a 1 share. And usually around a .5.

There isn’t much that 98.9 can do that will make an impact. At least with sports they can shut off the stereo carrier and the signal is better for a little further. Anyone remember Chick 98.9? 😂

If it weren’t for the morning show, 95.9 would probably be a format change target. When it signed on, that signal was going to struggle to do that well just because it brought another signal in to the market. I guess one could argue on a commercial level it replaced 100.5 which went non-comm in 2005.

It doesn’t seem the market is due for any additional older leaning formats, with 96.9, 104.5, 102.5 (well they play primarily older stuff), 105.5, etc. I’ve noticed 101.7 doesn’t do nearly as well as they used to with adult hits. Has 96.9 been the culprit?

Yup. Kirkman has like 3 pet formats they’ve had on their stations for years and years. Sports, oldies and some form of classic country. They have WJNI for their religious format, which does well for them, but every other signal has rotated among those.

98.9 was oldies before it went sports. When you consider them and iHeart with their 4 rock solid FMs, that doesn’t leave many signals for format changes.

I’m not sure what prompted the change since they’re doing pretty well, but within the last week or so WIWF has changed their sound a bit. They had been somewhat of a rock leaning classic hits station, but they’ve added more pop/R&B like Stevie Wonder, Chicago (from the 80s), Whitney Houston, the Commodores, Madonna, Bee Gees, Kool and the Gang, etc. Nothing major or earth changing, but these were artists I always noticed were absent compared to most classic hits stations. Sounds a lot more like sister station Sunny in Myrtle Beach now.

Also seems like 96.9 has added a few more 90s tracks.

I was all set to say they went Spanish.

Then someone said that's a translator for WNMB Myrtle Beach.

I remember "The Breeze" simulcasting with 99.7. Something different.
Beach music. I remember hearing about but don't know whether I ever listened. I probably did because I was hearing 98.9 in Myrtle Beach for years.

I remember 99.7 being standards. A great standards format, in fact, and not this mix of oldies, AC and standards. 99.5 came on in Myrtle Beach the next year but that's also when 99.7 joined with 98.9.

Z and Star tied in 12+ this last book. WXLY continues to slip.
104.5 is doing pretty badly too. WXLY is tied with The Wolf, which as I had said in another thread would probably do much better if they would drop JB&B. Seems like the resilience of 101.7 may have come at the expense of those 3.

That terrible Valentine morning show iHeart forces them to carry is probably a big reason why. Who in Charleston cares about what is going on in Los Angeles? And that’s 95% of the show. Most of the bits are probably taped from the previous day due to the time difference.

They’ve had a syndicated morning show for years and years there, mostly terrible. They could simulcast Mark Robertson from 98.7 in Savannah but he’s probably near retirement too.
