“Days of our Lives” to move the hourglass to Peacock

Forgive my ignorance but when you say networks target ages 18-49... I suppose you mean they targer mostly on-demand viewers or something like that. I can't imagine the 18-25 crowd actually sitting down in front of the TV to watch a CBS sitcom. And this comes from someone who is well in supposed target age of the networks.
I am talking about the ages, not how they view. There are overnight ratings, mostly live or immediate playback on a VTR. There are 24 hour ratings that add in "next day" and even 3-day summaries that include live and recorded.

However a show is viewed, networks target 18-49 because that is what ad agencies look at... either all of it or some subset like "English dominant Hispanic women 25-44" and the like.

We are talking here about broadcast nets ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, Univision, Telemundo and the CW.

In Ken Corday's new interview with Soap Opera Digest, he states that fans will "probably be getting more show content [aka longer episode lengths] after February." {Jason47 note: "Days" will no longer have to be just 37 minutes each episode, meaning scenes that would normally be cut for time will now be able to be included in each episode.] Corday also notes that "Come spring, we will be able to say and do things that are a little bit more titillating than on broadcast." Pick up the August 29 issue of Soap Opera Digest to read the entire interview!

Lipstick on a pig, but more power to him.
Might just work. Titillating words and actions pulled WWF/WWE out of its doldrums in the late '90s, and Howard Stern unleashed basically saved Sirius' skin in the early '00s and made its eventual takeover of rival XM possible, despite XM's effort to race Sirius to the bottom of the cretinous talk barrel by employing Opie and Anthony. This is America. Crude content sells.

Without naming any names (obviously), you'd be surprised how many non-DAYS affiliated people are pissed about this move internally at NBCU. Those are who I'm talking about.
Reading between the lines, it sounds like even the affiliates were taken aback by this move as they had by all accounts planned and committed to airing DAYS for the 2022-23 season. DAYS might not have been doing blockbuster numbers on broadcast, but now they're stuck trying to fill a hole in their schedule with... Dateline reruns?

This was clearly a last-minute desperation move to try and save Peacock, not kill DAYS. It's just how it'll likely play out.

I watch Days, and I'm a little surprised to hear scenes get cut for time. On many episodes, they use extended flashbacks from recent days. In extreme cases, they'll even use flashbacks from the same episode!

I received an email from Peacock last week offering a subscription discount of 1 year for $19.99, or monthly for $1.99. I'm sure it's being offered to everyone who has the free Peacock. So they are responding to those who say it's not affordable.

To the fans of Days, like myself.... There's no excuse for not streaming the show on Peacock! I don't know when the offer expires, but sign up now while it's available.

This sounds similar to what happened during the brief run "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" had online a few years ago. I recall reading comments from viewers who found it a bit jarring to hear certain swear words coming from characters who were previously unable to use that language. IIRC, Prospect Park dialed back on that angle because it was ill-received.

That said, I realize the days of my grandmother and me watching "Love of Life" are long past, and I can't expect today's audiences to desire the same type of content I enjoyed in the '70s and '80s. I hope this works because I don't want soaps to die completely.

My feeling is that they'll go the way of variety shows well before mid-century, maybe by mid-decade.

NBC News Daily will be the replacement but we seen Another World and Passions were replaced by 2 extra hours of Today. I would be surprised if NBC News Daily might change direction successful or not and move to 11am as 5th Hour Today before lunch.

In New York on WNBC 4 it airs at Noon / 11c where Days of our Lives use to air.
In Des Moines they decided just yesterday to swap NBC News Daily to 2pm and put Rachel Ray at 1pm.

When ABC replaced All My Children with that foodie show "The Chew", they knew it wouldn't attract the same number of viewers as AMC, but make up for it by being a cheap show to produce, and more profitable. Well, where is that cheap, profitable show today? A forgettable blip on daytime TV.

in NY - they've not only moved news into that time slot - they've changed their entire afternoon schedule!

not to get O/T - but the main reason that "The Chew" (which I liked) became a forgettable blip on daytime TV was because of what was going on with Mario Batali....

well it lasted 7 years. But I feel I would see GMA 7-10am, Kelly and Ryan 10-11am, The View 11am-noon, Tamron Hall 1-2pm and GH 2-3pm unless Disney needs to change their streaming strategies.

and in many cities, Rachael Ray's show is shown 2-3 pm - where would you put her?????

The flashbacks are intended to fill in missing plot lines for those who don't or can't view every day... or for people who are doing chores while viewing and miss some scenes.

A little over 50 years ago, I used to run about 9 hours a day of soaps and drama shows on one of my stations in South America, and became quite involved with the production company in Peru. The scrips were intentionally written so each plot element was at least done in a synopsis once and mentioned briefly another time so that they were easy to follow.

This is why story arcs go 6 months. So you can miss some time and not be complete lost in the plot.

ABC owns K&R but they synidicate it. Not all ABC affiliates carry it.
