ALT 92.3 Is Teasing a Huge Announcement Today at 5

They are running a 90s weekend for Labor Day FYI.

Yes, I'm aware. Mentioned it three posts above the one you quoted. 🙂

WNYL = Alt 92.3 in NYC.

Would love to see the expanded music variety stick around in some form. Beats hearing Glass Animals "Heat Waves" being played for the 20,000th time.

By the way, in response to an earlier post, "New York's Alternative Rock" is now the primary positioner being used on air. That was changed some time ago.

The folks who maintain social media for the station haven't gotten around to updating the logo to reflect the new positioner, for whatever reason.

Plowed by Sponge. I'm impressed. That band is from Detroit, yet I never hear them on WDZH (other than the Sunday morning flashbacks show once in a blue moon). Go figure.

Hey Christina, Brad and Mike - Play them on 98.7 in Detroit!! The Verve Pipe (from Grand Rapids) is another band with singles that charted highly in the 90s that WDZH *never* plays.

It's nice to see WNYL getting some much deserved attention. WDZH still sounds like a neglected station.

The ratings were the lowest since KRock 2.0 in Winter 2008. They need to do a major name change or format change. It isn't working. Elliot in the morning is horrible. The only saving grace is Brady and Kevan and Omar when he's on and Lars.

The problem is complex.

First, alternative rock is fragmented, with groups that like some and hate some of the product coming out today. This is really a set of several formats looking for songs that all groups like.

Second, New York is not a great fit for a music form that appeals mostly to non-Hispanic white people. The market is now only 43% non-Hispanic white. It is 17% Black, 14% Asian and 27% Hispanic. None of those ethnic groups has much interest in alternative rock... so basically 3 out of every five people in the market have no cultural interest.

Formats like CHR, classic hits, Urban and AC cross ethnic borders. Alternative, like country, does not.

It would be interesting to see how the AQH share shakes out by day part. Is Elliot dragging down the overall AQH share?

Perhaps Audacy picked the wrong format for 92.3.

I will say the Labor Day weekend programming was better than their normal programming.

My sense is the audience for this format isn't primarily in mornings. I'd guess afternoon drive is bigger.

iHeart seems to have the same view, since they tend to push Woody for mornings, with local in afternoons.

You mean CBS, since it was their decision. This is a heritage dial position for rock in NYC.

This was once K-Rock, home of Howard Stern.

Its final format under CBS Radio management was "AMP 92.3". 92.3 flipped to "Alt" the same week that Entercom took over CBS Radio.

I liked it with music in the mornings with Omar. NYC is not Alternative or country friendly hence why Audacy should have put Alt on 94.7 and the Block on 92.3. The Block would be doing better as would Alt. We did need a classic hip hop station in the city.

Who could not see the ratings drop coming when they switched to talk in the morning. You are either a talk station or a music station. Adding talk in the morning is just going to piss people off and stop them from coming back the rest of the day.

btw - I tried many times to listen in the morning, despite only wanting to hear music. It is awful. These guys basically killed the format.

For some reason that wasn't a problem when Howard did mornings at 92.3.

Two totally different things. Alt 92.3 was launched by Audacy-then-Entercom in 2017. CBS made a decision to drop rock on the 92.3 frequency twice.

How much of K-Rock being successful was Stern? Was he holding up the whole thing by himself?
