B98.5 HD2 and Chuck 103.7 FM

Couple things I noticed today...

B98.5 HD2 was broadcasting dead air all day. Anyone know how long that has been happening? Unlike Power 96's HD subchannels which appear to be completely off the air, WSB-FM-HD2 is on the air.

103.7 Chuck FM, after months if not years of increasing their 1990s and newer content, seems to be reversing course and playing more 1980s and especially 1970s content. Much of their playlist is now AM gold. When they first started, they were 80s-centric with some 90s; now they seem to be playing a lot more 70s, and very little 90s and newer. They have never played this much 70s music historically; I thought they might have flipped or was picking up DX until they identified themselves.
Is Cox using Chuck as a flanker for the River?
 
Unless a station leases its HD2 & 3 signals, the engineering staff usually isn't too alarmed if it goes down briefly. And the studio-transmitter links for the HD signals are often on cheaper connections, so more chance of failure.
 
The Winder translator at 107.1 has been playing 60s and 70s for a while. Only FM station I know of doing this. I wouldn't be surprised if the Chuck change is related to this.

The Winder translator is translating WJBB 1300 AM (the old WIMO) out of Winder. That's been its format for a while.
 
It's amazing to me how far you can pick it up going east. 250 watts goes pretty far without interference. Especially when your antenna sits 1400 feet HAAT
 
There is a metal barrier on the antenna nulling to the south and west that re-directs the RF toward the east. You can pick us up 50 miles NE but you can't get us five miles SW.

And yes, 1400' is a good start.

Weird that 96.1 HD's would be off. Isn't HD4 used to feed 102.1 Fox FM?

Yes since first week in July. Main HD1 is the only one on air. TOH on Fox-FM still says WWWQ-HD4. Of course TOSOTR still says W228CA Suwanee. That’s been rebroadcasting WSBB for quite some time. 102.1 barely reaches outside the perimeter and only streams from their website. I hope WWPW HD-4 comes back soon. I enjoy Scott Shannon and Rick Dees on the weekends.

WSB HD2 is now playing “Mix Tape” hits from the 80s and 90s. WWPW HD2 is now playing “96.1 HD2 Peach” with a very similar format playing 80s and 90s also but seems more like the old Peach 94.9 soft AC. No WWPW HD3/4 yet and no Fox FM on HD.
 
I feed your pain. Most of major broadcasters in Atlanta are part of publicly held corporations with large percentage of the shareholders only concerned with “this quarters profits”. If a “service” is not generating enough revenue to justify its expense, sooner or later it will go away.*

That being said does "Fox FM" (from what I can tell not a publicly held company) need the HD channel to "feed" translator W271CV?

*Being out of the "money" demos almost any music station I enjoy gets the ax!

Um yeah, this is a business.. always has been, and stations have to make money.

you expect stations to continue to do something that loses money or doesnt turn a profit?

As I attempted to express: if music station wants to make money it will not play stuff I like. I accept that they want to make money. I accept that a publicly held corporation's duty is to make money for the shareholders. I don't have to like that ad agencies are instructed but their clients (mostly publicly held companies) to totally ignore my age demo.

What does not being publicly held have to do with it? All translators must have an originating station. And in this scenario there is an easy answer..

W271CV filed a couple weeks ago to change originating station to 1260 WMDG East Point.

W271CV has a horrible signal. I truly hope someone adds it to one of their HD subchannels.

I have worked for publicly healed corporations and some some stations that were not. IMHO Smaller operations innovate faster and usually try to operate for the long haul verses quarterly P & L because it's their money invested in the station. No golden parachute if they fail.

Getting the 1260 in Eastpoint should allow them to have a little better audio input with a "direct feed" verses extra processing from an HD channel sub channel. Are they going to get the W261DL (100.1) translator too?
