Arizona gets Grayer

Flagstaff's RF 32 was the home of the late KCFG Channel 9. I wonder if Gray plans to use it as a satellite for 3 and/or 5, and use 9 as the PSIP.

As far as Yuma goes, with all networks now covered by Channel 9 in El Centro and 13 in Yuma, I have no idea what they'd do with 11.

I think the Yuma station is far more interesting in general. The CBS affiliation for KYMA runs through July 2023. Is Gray gonna try and pick them off?

Flagstaff will probably be either an upgrade from one of the translators or maybe maybe a WYMT-type operation with news opt-outs for Northern Arizona. They would have a surplus translator but they'd have three muxes in Flag as they do in Phoenix. They could also use the new station and KPHE-LD in tandem.

If that had been successful, Tegna would still be doing it with KNAZ-TV.

Yuma is definitely a head-scratcher. Gray does own around 47 CBS affiliates and a lot of stations in larger markets than the owners of KYMA. Gray also currently owns 2 out of the 3 CBS affiliates in Arizona and may try to go for the trifecta here. This would make it a standalone station in a small market -- definitely going to be interesting. Affiliation agreements are usually negotiated starting a year out so this could be going on right now for all we know. Perhaps a satellite of KTVK? They would have to buy the Yuma DMA rights to the syndicated programming. They paid a lot for these two licenses I don't think it makes sense to use them just for ATSC 3.0 signals.

Flagstaff is part of the Phoenix DMA so Gray would be maxed out on the two full-power owned stations in the market. IMHO this rules out a completely separate new full power in Flag teamed with a translator in Phoenix to get cable and satellite must carry (same arrangement as KFPH and KMOH) unless they work through an LMA. Another possibility that has been mentioned is an upgraded translator to a satellite of 3 and 5. This could be, but again they wont get satellite must carry but could get cable must-carry with local news and commercials is a possibility. As is mentioned Tegna has tried that with KNAZ but yet again IMHO Tegna is not the right owner for that and Flagstaff has grown a lot since then. Or it could just be an upgraded satellite with one of the translators being used as an ATSC 3.0 stream. Just my random thoughts...

Not so. The long-form CP hit today with this exhibit. The facility is going to be 100 kW from Mormon Mountain on the KNAZ-TV mast.

The Commission’s multiple ownership rules limit common ownership of television stations with overlapping contours in the same DMA. The new allotment in Flagstaff, is located approximately 200 miles from Phoenix. The contours of the new Flagstaff station and Gray’s existing stations in Phoenix will not overlap, as shown in the attached map, thus Gray’s common ownership of these stations complies with the Commission’s multiple ownership rules.

Yuma 11 will be on the NPG tower at Glamis, California, 5 kW directional. That is a lower ERP than the former KYMA on 11.
 
Interesting.... I forgot about the overlap contour exemption. The power level is definitely low for a UHF but that combined with the directional antenna says they are deliberately trying to avoid overlap. So this new Full-power tv station could be used with the recently acquired translator in Phoenix.... This would def give them full must-carry depending upon the programming...
As for Yuma, just enough power to cover cities of license in that DMA based on the contours. The speculation continues -- if the Flagstaff station was licensed as a satellite would overlapped contours be a factor.
 
Gray must have some money making take on this, otherwise they wouldn't be spending
big money. Maybe a full power ATSC 3.0 subscription service.......
 
I noticed that - they spent a lot on both Yuma and Flag. I can't believe they will just use it to throw up some ATSC 3.0 streams or some kind of service -- in Phoenix maybe but not Yuma or Flag. Still a mystery... I am still leaning toward a full power satellite of both 3 and 5 in Flag with local drop ins. They duplicate the news on 3 and 5 now maybe one of those 1/2 hours is used for Northern AZ news? Then take one of the translators in Flag and one in Phoenix and use it for 3 and 5 ATSC 3.0. Yuma is a big mystery unless they chase a network affiliation. People in the know aren't talking and we won't know until they fire it up.
