August numbers are here

August numbers: Radio Industry News, Radio Show Prep, Radio Promotions, Radio Station Data, Podcast News

Nice jumps for Sunny and Majic.

Upticks for a few other stations that usually reside in the upper reaches.

La Raza trending down. El Norte also with a drop. Will Estrella stay in the radio biz?

Country Legends OTA seems to be sinking, but impressive streaming number.

Our favorite dumpster fire, Praise the Infomercials 92.1, sinks back into the zeroes.

Our favorite landfill fire, KQBU, is a no-show again.

And another Gowch for KFNC at 0.1, tying it with Classical on an HD-2.

I can't say I listen to KMJQ much, but they seem to be playing a bit more hip hop when I catch them while flipping channels. Could this be contributing to their resurgence, or is it that Black listeners were under represented during the pandemic? Possibly a mix of both?

I wonder if the 6+ increase for KGLK/KHPT will translate in the demos that matter, as they haven't been top 5 in 25-54 since last June.

The 1.8 share for KBME last month passed me by when last month's results were released, but I am curious how well they are doing in Men 25-54 given that they have been at a 1.5 share or higher in 6+ even though the postseason is still a month away. It's clear that the Astros have cemented themselves as Houston'a team, though.

Houston radio listeners really love their Sunny.

The likes of Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach, and Shinedown continue to be in vogue with many Houston listeners, given the buzzingly high ratings.

Hit-driven radio in Houston continues to perform less stellar compared to other major markets.

NPR KUHF is below a 2 share. And we are getting close to the midterms. (KTRH is just outside the Top 10 6+.)

We'll count on KILT-FM to gain revenue when the Texans play this season.

We keep thinking that something will be done with KROI after every rating period and nothing ever happens. I’m beginning to think they don’t care about ratings for that station.

Look at it this was, you own KROI and it has never done well. If you sell it, you take a bath in red ink. If you keep it, it had better be really cheap to operate and maybe help your other stations grab a buy or two that could go elsewhere. Neither scenario is good but something cheap to run and maybe causes you to get a couple of buys, who cares if it even shows at all. The lesser of the two evils is keeping the station and making it cost you the least amount of money possible. In such a scenario, who cares about ratings.

Possible...

But Urban One is a public corporation, and its auditors would have taken impairment charges if the station was not able to be valued at the same level as previously on the books.

Lots of public corporations took such charges as AMs declined in value, too.

KROI has probably lost over 80% of its value since RO purchased it in 2004. Perhaps as much as 90%.

Once again, beating the drum: RO should sell 92.1 to either iHeart or Audacy to provide a new home for either company’s AM SportsTalker. It would rid RO of a major headache, and the reformatted station would not be a RO format competitor. SportsTalk on 92.1 would firmly solidify that station’s market leadership in the format, and possibly kill off 97.5. It makes too much sense.

it makes sense, but it takes two to tango. It looks like no one wants to dance.

According to the Research Director article, it seems they have suddenly shot up from a tie at #12 to a tie at #4 in 18-34, but their rank in 25-54 and 18-49 was not revealed. Surely those numbers can't be lagging THAT far behind, but that's definitely a random surge I found interesting.

Other things from the article of note:

- KODA is dominant at a double digit share in 18-49, and with a roughly 4 share lead in 18-34. It is currently their world and we are just living in it
- KKBQ is the 6+ Country leader, but at least in 18-34, it is KILT-FM who leads the battle, finishing at #7 (with KKBQ's rank not shown).

KROI would compliment KSBJ perfectly in the places they are hard to receive south of Houston. They could change 96.9 to a simulcast of Vida Unida. Some of the Hope media pea shooters along the coast could be divested or back to OTA for NGEN.

KROI would compliment KFNC with a legal signal, unlike the use of 92.5.

The ultimate fantasy for Hope Media Group would be to acquire KHCB, which not only would give it the excellent 105.7 signal, but also KHCB’s extensive network of rebroadcasters and translators. Very unlikely to happen, though.

If Gow was to purchase 92.1 (which I have advocated) they should dump the 97.5 signal. They wouldn’t get much money for it, but a religious broadcaster such as VCY America would probably snatch it up.

Why not KHCB buying 92.1 for their Spanish language ministry.
I've had that thought. The 92.1 signal is solid in the heavily Hispanic areas of the market, especially with the new tower.

KHCB could then sell the 1400 AM signal and its 101.5 translator...but I'm guessing any likely buyer would be another Spanish language religious broadcaster...🤔

Centro Cristiano could be a potential customer of 1400 and the translator.
