GSP monthly ratings

I looked over the July ratings for GSP and not much changed although a lot stations dropped, seem like a lot of listeners were probably on vacation?
We actually don't see "ratings" in the public Nielsen releases; we see "shares". There are always 100 shares in every market in every book.

What you are seeing is further fragmentation, not a change in Persons Using Radio (PUR).

David, what is it with markets around the size of GSP (diary markets) occasionally having these books/trends where non-subscribers such as WLFJ and WEPR show up? I know GSP used to be a quarterly book but now it’s monthly. Not sure when that changed. Every few books the non-comms and non-subscribers will show up. Same in Charleston with Saga’s stations.

Nielsen has changed the rules several times recently in regards to non-subscribed stations. Also keep in mind that many non commercial stations do subscribe, so they are listed if they do buy the book.

In the markets that have continuous measurement, with 12 books, some stations only buy the quarterly report and not the ones we used to call "monthlies". So they are not always included in the published reports.

So, if you see a station not show in January and February but show up in March, they just buy the quarterly reports. Non-coms often do this.

The latest numbers are pretty boring, but a few things stuck out: 6+, WMYI is in 4th place. Looks like WMYI might be hurting WROQ, WRTH, and WSPA-FM, who continues to flop around in the low 3’s like a fish that’s been pulled out of the water.

1.4 for 98.5 is impressive. Alternative isn’t doing much better than that in some markets on full market signals - and they’re just a tenth of a point behind I The Block, who has coverage in each primary city of the market. I believe that’s the highest they’ve clocked since they signed on in 2012.

Both sports stations are tied in the low 0’s. LOL

X98.5 deserves all the success they’ve been a good Alt station overall with a good mix.

WYRD at a new low of 3.9…the audience collapsed after January 2021’s all time high of an 8.6 and they just never came back. The station has also lost a lot of influence in the Upstate GOP community with recent in-party squabbling especially in Greenville County. No big loss though lol.

An even bigger shame than WYRD, even though they don’t have the annoyances of Tara and Charlie is 94.5. One of the best signals in the market relegated to mostly third rate syndicated talk.

WGTK is a sorry affair for sure, are the folks at WYRD still acting petty towards them? LOL.

WMYI has a pretty solid playlist so it’s not surprising ahead of WSPA and WRTH. I really don’t know what can be done about the stale WSPA at this point while WRTH’s playlist is a mess. Salem is a mess as a whole in this market lol.

I’m not sure what 103.3 is doing these days. The playlist is pretty much 80s-2010s, it’s definitely a lot newer leaning than most classic hits stations. Sometimes a weird combination of “lost” hits, funk, 90s Alt, 2000s AC, really a hodgepodge.

Maybe WSPA could play more Christmas music. 🙄 They seem to like doing that when 1) there's a pandemic and people need to feel happy 2) when it's 98 degrees in July and 3) during the Christmas season which apparently starts around Halloween.

Another interesting note. This is the first time in almost forever that iHeartRadio beat Audacy in total market share.

Well, yesterday Tara was railing on her “best of” that the GOP is essentially too liberal, so I feel like the extremism spouted off by her, Dana Loesch and Charlie may be tiring people.

Dana Loesch was a terrible replacement for Limbaugh. I know it was probably an Audacy directive, but the upstate would probably appreciate Dan Bongino (extreme, but fits the market) or the slightly less far right Clay Travis and Buck Sexton who were the “official” Limbaugh replacement.

Another concerning sign for WORD: their party is out of power, midterm season is almost in full swing and they’re sitting in the doldrums. A couple of election cycles before, they would have been grabbing a 6 share. Not that 94.5 is doing any better.

I'm hoping everyone, everywhere, is starting to tire of extremist talk radio. 🤞 How many hosts can scream about how great the GOP is and how the liberals are ruining the country? No one is creative at all anymore.

WVOC in Columbia and WSCC in Charleston have been struggling lately. WBT in Charlotte isn’t nearly as bad, they’ve struggled recently but did well in the last PPM. iHeart’s talk stations in Winston Salem and Raleigh, though, are doing great.

WORD’s decline in a market like Greenville-Spartanburg should be alarming. My personal opinion is the local hosts are allowed way too much leeway in developing the image of the station. WORD’s has been very hostile going back to Russ Cassell and even earlier. WORD was extreme before extremism became the norm.

Too bad SC Public Radio never put WEPR in HD so they could carry the talk and music and talk feeds. Columbia has a separate station for each feed, as does Charleston which also has HD on WSCI with music and talk on HD1 and talk on HD2.

You're referring to WYRD. WORD went its own way.

My point is call letters don’t matter to the post before the latest. The WORD (AM) calls are on 950 without even a simulcast. WORD is known by almost everyone as being at 106.3, which happens to be WYRD-FM, not 950. But do the listeners care?

Nope.

Just curious.

In this chart Beasley shows up as a trace in the GSP ratings. I assume this may be some of the Charlotte signals which are strong in Spartanburg and reach into parts of Greenville County. 95.1, 97.9, and 101.9 all reach well into the Upstate. 103.7 is weaker and only gets into parts of Spartanburg. I would speculate that 97.9 and 101.9 may attract some Upstate listeners as they do a good job with their distinctive Urban formats. I prefer 95.1 when I listen to hit music radio, but 93.7 and 98.1 have that format covered, along with 96.1 as another Charlotte choice. So perhaps 97.9 and 101.9 may be the minimal contenders here. Just wondering.

I would bet that all comes from WBAV. They’re generally the only station that puts a decent enough signal in enough of the market to pull a 1 share or so.

97.9 is pretty much unlistenable in Greenville county due to it being sandwiched between 97.7 and 98.1. ‘PEG has a directional signal this way to protect 98.1 which deteriorates the signal faster.

I think 95.1 has a strong signal and is a bit better than 101.9, although both come in good north of Laurens Rd.
97.9 does make it into Greenville County, but may indeed have some interference issues due to 98.1.

And not a Beasley station, but WLNK would also come in good in Greenville but there is same channel interference with that low power station.

96.1 has a strong signal in the Upstate but is lagging behind 95.1 in the Charlotte ratings with the CHR format. Ace and TJ returned to 95.1 after departing 96.1. Wonder if iHeart would consider a flip?

CHR hasn’t been doing well in Charlotte recently which makes me question if the market can really support two CHR’s and a Hot AC, especially with CHR in seemingly endless doldrums. I’m not sure how 96.1 does as far as billing but I would imagine iHeart will probably try to do what they can to avoid a format change unless the station is bleeding money.

I know Earth FM was mentioned earlier. To add, it sounds like they’re trying to compete with The Lake, perhaps? They played Kid Rock, Lita Ford and Incubus in the same hour and the 80s/90s rock focus seems to say so, but they do play some random softer stuff as well.
