Washington Latest in Tri/Walla Walla

More Tri-Cities observations from a day trip today...went to the big swap meet at the fairgrounds and more.

Noted KZXR-FM 101.7 OFF the air, but 95.3 (// 1310) was still on. Faded past MP 90 or so on I-82 and replaced by U-Rock.

The new Kool FM 97.5 is definitely a placeholder until a new buyer is found. It's the satellite Westwood One format with no local advertising...ads were national spots or direct-response filler. The satellite format is much better than most mid/large market classic hits stations. 'Along Comes a Woman' by Chicago? "Oh, wow!"

KKSR 95.7 runs AT40 The 80s on Saturday mornings.

104.3 KMBI translator OFF the air, probably due to the new KZJJ 104.5 in Mesa. Also NO KTZB-LP 104.7 (Spanish Rel station).

I checked the Positive Life KGTS-91.3 signal strength all over the Tri-Cities. It never got below 3-4 bars out of 5, and was mostly 5 bars in Kennewick. So, why do they need 103.9 Richland again? Love the station but 103.9 could be used for another purpose.

Full-quieting, some hiss, from KPBX-91.1 Spokane, especially in Kennewick. Pleasantly surprised.

The other new Spanish station, KYJJ-94.1 Boardman, is blocked in Tri by Jump Off Joe and other hills, and I only had the Walla Walla translator (with classical music, via KHSS-HD2).

KMBI translator is off for some other reason - it was on less than a couple weeks ago. I think it'll be back at some point soon.

I love the two new Classic Hits stations in the Tri Cities - KKSR 95.7 is Preset 1, KOLW 97.5 is Preset 2. Bob FM 94.5 Walla Walla has a pretty good signal here too, and it's Preset 3. Note on 94.5 - it does air sports games.

KYJJ 94.1 is indeed blocked, though KZJJ 104.5 is a direct simulcast (they ID together).

No sign of KTZB-LP and it's probably done for now. It was supposed to go back on by September 11 otherwise the license would automatically expire.

I agree that 103.9 could be used for another purpose, though 91.3 isn't necessarily the strongest station in Pasco, especially indoors.

KPQ 102.1 booms in and KPLW 89.9 can be heard in Pasco.

I thought 94.5 was still Fox Sports...all I heard was football play-by-play, BYU/Oregon.
You live in Pasco now? Didn't know that. I guess you found a job out there, congrats.
Heard 97.5 being played on the intercoms at Ragtime Antiques in Richland yesterday. Two thrift stores had K-LOVE playing. No love for PLR?
My favorite thrift store in the Tri was closed due to a family emergency. I'm coming back for you soon, Atomic City! :)

KZJJ must have signed on 8/31 or close to it. They were heard on my PCT hike to Hogback Mountain. It's obvious, no other 104.5's nearby are Spanish. Meanwhile, the 'Fan' Yakima translator was swapping with and then wiped away by KZJJ just before Sunnyside! I thought Ahtanum Ridge was still relatively line-of-sight to I-82? 106.1 was gone too, replaced by The Bridge.
Ironically, 101.3 (KIT) and 96.1 (KYAK) were solid until east of Grandview...

Indeed - I got a new job in Pasco and moved here last month. KZJJ signed on shortly after I moved here, roughly around the 15th. It was silent for the first few days of operation.

94.5 flipped to Bob FM last week, though it appears to broadcast sports events.

Any website anniunced yet for the KYJJ/KZJJ Boardman-Mesa combo?
Not that I know of. The website used for KYOZ 1330 prior to its flip to Worship 24/7 is still active and contains links to KYJJ & KZJJ public files. Home --- KYJJ 94.1 was Ke Buena 94.1 simulcasting KYOZ when it first signed on.

Also, KYJJ 94.1 seemed to have been off because it's back on now with audio a second or two ahead of KZJJ 104.5. KYJJ signal isn't 100% in Pasco; KZJJ signal is 100%.

Mix 105.3 (KONA-FM Tri-Cities) has apparently blown up the morning show with Michael McDonnal and Patty Banner replaced by "AJ and Raleigh". Not sure of the why's here, but Michael is still on the website as OM, but Banner is nowhere to be found. Too bad, they were a good team.

Mike and Patti were a good team. And, since the TSM purchase of CCM, we’re woking together again. Different radio stations, same company. Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃

A couple weeks ago: KLKY 96.1 appears to have flipped to a Regional Mexican format; I heard Mexican music with a TOTH Legal ID - 'KLKY Stanfield, OR'. Translator K237DP 95.3 is still airing U-Rock radio. No HD on 96.1 (or any other Jacobs radio station that I know of).

Also, the branding of KYJJ 94.1/KZJJ 104.5 is La Ranchera. Facebook page: La ranchera 104.5fm

Very much illegal if K237DP is operating without an AM or HD2/3 feeder. I noted dead air and static on 96.1 the last couple of times in Tri-Cities. Static was 3-4 bars on the Pioneer, meaning it wasn't an empty frequency - the transmitter was feeding static on that frequency.
Does anyone know if the parent KWCQ-106.1 Condon OR is even on the air? I tried for them east of Sunnyside where the Yakima station mostly fades out. Just a weak K291BS if anything. When they were on 93.5, they were very weak but audible in Wapato/Toppenish. If not, another illegal tactic by Jacobs. K297BE cannot be on the air without the full-power feeder in Condon OR on 106.1.
When 102.3 was smooth jazz, they were only simulcasting KWDR for about a year, then went to their own program...93.5 went to Spanish Religion. A couple of years' worth of breaking FCC policy. Now that it's Tri-Country, they once again feed from KWDR and also send the signal to Wenatchee on 107.5!

The dead-air on 96.1 lasted until a couple of weeks ago when I began hearing Mexican music. Thought it was a strong pirate but I heard the ID the other day. Definitely illegal but not the only illegally operated station either.

104.9 K285FN (Fire) and 106.9 K295AV (Grupera) are supposedly fed via KQFO HD2 & HD3 respectively, yet KQFO only has HD1. Fire also plays uncensored music; including the F-word on a few songs.

KHSS also only has HD1 despite feeding two translators though I'm convinced they're experiencing issues. KNHK (ex-KZIU) feeds three different translators but does not transmit HD anymore.

What I want to know is if the 106.1 in Condon is ON the air. It should be heard along the eastern flanks of the Gorge and towards Boardman along I84. 107.3 is definitely on the air in Tri.

I'm pretty certain KWCQ isn't on the air. Last fall, I went along I-84 from Boardman to Biggs Junction then down US-97 to Redmond and I didn't once hear KWCQ.

I forgot to mention one thing - Jacobs Radio does not maintain or use its Emergency Alert System (EAS) equipment on any of their stations; same thing with 104.9 K285FN, 106.9 K295AV or 94.3 KSAE-LP.

How do you know that? It’s a serious accusation!

I have the capability of recording I/Q of large swaths of the FM band for up to 12 hours at a time in addition to directly monitoring audio of stations when monthly tests are relayed.

Since I moved to Tri-Cities, I've monitored for the relay of September, October (statewide/NWS) and November scheduled monthly tests. Most stations (Townsquare, Stephens, PLR, K-Love) relayed all three successfully within an hour while Jacobs Radio stations -- 95.3 K237DP/96.1 KLKY, 102.3 K272ED/93.5 and 107.3 K297BE in addition to K285FN, K295AV and KSAE-LP did not.

Have you tried emailing them and asking why this seems not to be done as required?

Try [email protected] as that is President Jeff Jacobs's email. Say that you are not looking to cause problems, but that you have observed a difficulty with the company's required tests and you'd like to alert them so they can take corrective action.

I also know that Jeff Jacobs is the usual fill-in for WX at KVEW-TV...probably because the KVEW AM anchor does news updates for the Jacobs stations during the morning drive.
An EAS violation is grounds for thousands in fines. Yes, this needs to be noted with Jacobs before the FCC hounds them.
