AM Frequency of the Week: 1290

Central Kansas:
Daytime, it’s a weak though somewhat still audible KMMM/Pratt. Nighttime, it’s a mix; I’ve never been able to discern a single station.

North Iowa:
Daytime, nothing. Nighttime is also a mix.
 
WHKY Hickory, NC Sept 20, after 11PM. Night time cheater running 50KW w/ daytime pattern. Loud and clear in WONE coverage area and over much of the mid-west. 9-21 night, audible with maybe their 1KW nite power with daytime pattern.
Check them tonight. Might hear them before the FCC cites the station.		Hickory, NC *

I was traveling around Florida and adjacent parts of the southeast early this year, and was hearing WHKY almost everywhere I went. So if indeed they; re "up to something", they've been at it for a while. I've also heard them a couple of times here in the Chicago area this year, but around here, WIRL and WHIO are both pretty strong, to the point where it would be tough for WHKY to break through. Even at 5kw day power.
 
That's kind of what I thought. Actually, I'm a little surprised I haven't heard them around here more often. Although getting past WIRL and WHIO where I am is no simple task.
 
Back in the 60s when I was in prep school in Rhode Island I learned what a directional antenna could mean.

WICE in Providence was a popular Top 40 in the '60s and their signal was adequate in most of Rhode Island given the size of the state.

My prep school was 12-13 miles from the WICE transmitter and there was so signal at all.
