When I talk about Lower Manhattan, I mean the borough south of 14th Street, which includes public housing projects in which older rhythmic music is popular, especially songs from the 1970s and the 1980s.
 
I wonder how the signal is, west of the Watchung Mountains. Places like the Caldwell's, Little Falls, Livingston, etc. Empire signals can struggle in those areas and they transmit 2x the height

I've never heard any issues with those signals there. It seems like it's fine. If anything they will suffer in Western Morris and parts of Sussex Counties.

Sussex county is not in the NYC MSA, so it is really of no concern to New York City market stations. And so little of the Morris County population is in the western area, that really does not matter, either.

And what percentage of the market population lives in those relatively small areas?

I'm not a statistician, so I can't really answer that question. It is simply that I have heard older rhythmic music played loudly in those areas, whether at house parties or at block parties, over the years. This is simply an observation, not an attempt to determine whether or not the residents of those areas would listen to The Block.

That is because the tall buildings in Lower Manhattan make it difficult for the signal from a relatively short transmitter in New Jersey to go through.
 
What tower are they using, the middle? I tried to locate the bays on google earth but the latest street photo is May 2022, all towers are bare, maybe they put them up after May. I would imagine for 40kw they would have at least 6 heavy ones.
 
It's a 4 bay antenna on Tower #3 (I believe that's the middle tower when looking towards NYC). Antenna went up in early May.

Point well taken. I suppose there's more of a concentration of tall buildings in lower Manhattan than in Midtown.
 
Was 94.7 still using any equipment from the WFME days in recent years? Seems like it all would have been pretty old, but I’ve often wondered if anything was salvageable. I’d think a lot of upgrades had to be done by Cumulus after they bought it.

It’s no better by me. I’m in Massapequa Park on Long Island (Southeast Nassau) and I got a little more HD1 than the old tower. Still can’t hold HD2 for Country and once the HD1 drops off, the analog spangled fades just as much as the old tower. Even though they went from 23,500 watts to 40,000 watts and moved closer to Long Island, I think the lower tower height makes it a zero change for me

From what I remember, Cumulus essentially rebuilt the site when they took it from Family. Given the financial issues Family had at the time, I would not be surprised if the equipment at the 94.7 site was not in the best of condition.

The old West Orange site is not listed as an aux, so I wonder if Audacy is pulling out of there completely of if they’ll eventually license it.
 
For what it's worth, I finally installed an omnidirectional antenna on the top of my building in Ridgewood, Queens. WXBK is now as strong as any of the stations from Manhattan, but I have no idea if that's because they're on a new tower or anything like that.
