98-3 The Vibe

Amazingly low ratings. It’s been mostly in the 1’s since it went on in May of 21 with a few books in the low 2’s. This recent book they were a 0.6. This is all 12 plus but that can’t bode well for their core demo either.

What gives? It’s a 50kw signal and the audio is fantastic. Is there just not room for a third CHR in Des Moines?

Aside from a morning and evening satellite show they have never added any other personalities or programming. Almost 16 months now. Yikes!

They should never have changed it from talk in my opinion. WHO 1040 is the #2 station without an FM translator. There is obviously a talk audience.

Meh…talk isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. They should have went full Rhythmic CHR in 2021 or kept it Classic Hip Hop. Now this mainstream CHR will fail too. you have to put programming effort in now and then if you want listeners.

There's an audience for good talk. Syndicated garbage mandated by corporate isn’t good talk and didn’t work.

No there really isn’t. Not in a format that fits radio here locally. And Liberal talk won’t fly among the business community in Des Moines. It’s tough because in many ways Des Moines is very homogenous in certain areas so what would be a natural fit on a property like this elsewhere won’t go here. Talk is now one of them. Not enough local interest or variety of interest on a mass level here.

On the other hand there is enough variety on the population, but it’s split down among groups such that no one group is big enough.

I don't know if that would be a success either. Iheartmedia has been trying Rythmic CHR in Cedar Rapids for several years on KOSY and it has been a flop. I do not see it being any more successful in Des Moines.

Liberal talk seems to be gaining ground in a lot of areas. I wouldn't rule it out but I don't believe Cumulus would be the company who could make it work.

KOSY isn’t hardly Rhythmic CHR at all. They have one or two token tracks added in a given hour that qualify it. Otherwise it sounds mainstream so that’s not a great example against the other competition.

There’s an audience for Liberal talk but the business community here isnt likely to support a viewpoint that often rails against consumer culture. And yes Cumulus won’t do it.

Right now the old Vibe got better ratings than they are currently.

What did the Vibe get for ratings? I don't remember it doing particularly well.

Well that settles it. Business... Bloomberg Radio it is! Just kidding. Although in my idealized world I would totally try to make KPSZ a Bloomberg affiliate. It can't possibly do any worse.
