SA PPM's SEP 2022

KONO remains unchallenged in the PPM-friendly office powerhouse with a solid 9 share.
KISS repositions in 2nd place (Billy Madison) but how else are they amping up?
KTKX dominates the classic rock with their highest 5.9

Jack-FM takes a tumble to 4.5. 961 Now is riding the CHR/awards show wave. Both talkers should do well for the midterm elections cycle.

KZEP/Spanish CHR is already beginning its ascent to a 2.5 but its still too early to tell for 95.1's format swap. Norteno 104.1 slips back into a 2.0 and Tejano 95.7 continues the spiral down.

QUESTIONS at ALPHA regarding moving Sports to 94.1 and the 4th consecutive book under a 1 SHARE? I realize how much effort they put into this station with Joe Reinagel, Van Camp, the syndicated shows and Im sure they are selling it big locally but such a decent signal for a low PPM return... I guess I shouldnt be too surprised since Sports in similarly-sized cities without an NFL/MLB team (Salt Lake, Orlando, Sacramento, Portland) also tank in ratings but what about Columbus, OH 107.1 FAN- they are #1 overall 6+...

In the case of C-Bus..... WBNS (The Fan) is the flagship station for the Buckeyes and they hit that topic hard. The Ohio State University's dominating presence in Columbus is perhaps even more pronounced than the Longhorns in Austin. KTXX's signal is not nearly as good as WBNS, but KTXX has never broken into the top 10 if I recall.

Another weird outlier is KXNO in Des Moines which is typically pretty strong despite the absence of pro sports or even a dominant "local" collegiate team.

I guess the town truly revolves around Ohio State- hence the meters hitting hard during football season...
Would SA Sports Star do just the same ratings-wise downsizing to 103.3/94.5 and cranking up 94.1 to a KONO/KISS contender? Or hell, has JACK-FM overstayed their welcome on 102.7? Alpha has had plenty of good formats on subpar sticks....

I would like to see/hear IHeart flip 104.5 KZEP to a similar format to their sister station KISS 107.9. Yeah, 104.5 is up since 95.1 flipped to their current format but not by much. A flip to the 90s/2000s format would complement the Iheart cluster and it will give listeners an alternative to Vibe and Magic.
From RadioInsight 10/06- iHeartMedia 90s/2000s Hits “Kiss 107.9” KZIS continues to show immediate growth since its June launch with a 1.4 – 2.2 – 3.2 trend.

Alpha Media- With the exception of KTSA, Alpha Media stations seem to be on the decline. The entire radio cluster is poorly programmed with "have been" radio/tv personalities. What a waste of $.

I have to think Alpha’s Sports Star move was more about local sales (independent of ratings). KTSA is a juggernaut when It comes to local advertising. The work they’ve put into the Sports Star is likely an attempt to duplicate the financial success of KTSA.

Unfortunately the niche formats usually mentioned as suggestions on these boards seem to be more about the personal interests of the posters with no real weight given to “would it make money?”. It is a business after all.

Even if they could fill a music format hole, what’s to prevent iHeart from throwing on a direct competitor? Especially in the music wold their “Prime Choice” or whatever they are calling it this week makes that pretty easy to do. Not so easy to build a talk or sports brand with local sales opportunities. Alpha had the product and has been polishing it for some time now.

Alpha should be commended for building brands with local personalities that can connect in a meaningful way with a local audience.

When the KONO STREAMING numbers start to beat a 20KW FM simulcast signal with city-grade penetration (not a translator) + full AM signal, then yes it will only be relying on a local sales team for revenue. I'm a fan of the local content and any National messaging $$ would be filtered/shared from ESPN programming... Me thinks they ran out of gas or "Energy" with trying to counter-punch iHeart/CMG.

104.5 is in prime territory to fully capture this emerging SPANISH CHR segment whom are likely in-tab panelists. And San Antonio commands a heavy Latino/Hispanic, lower-household income audience who can fully relate to the programming. The next book will show the flip effect of 95.1...

Spanish language CHR is mostly consumed by first and some second generation Hispanics. Most of the San Antonio Hispanic population is later generation. Only about 15% of San Antonio Hispanics are Spanish dominant, meaning that most area Hispanics don't use any Spanish language radio and are more likely, in fact, to be listening to classic hits, country or rock.

HOWEVER, here is the kicker: Have you sampled 104.5 and their delivery? The majority of their imaging, delivery and interviews are ENGLISH dominant- even their dialect is truly bilingual with little accent or freely code switching. They have re-tooled the traditional SPANISH CHR for "San Anto" and I personally hear a lot of radios out and about (Southcross, Mililtary, Gen McMullen) blasting this station. Only the music and 90% of the spots are Spanish, a commonality our San Antonio Hispanics sit through. The 50k attendance of BAD BUNNY last month demonstrated this!

The music is the limiting factor as not only is it in Spanish, it is mostly populated with Puerto Rican slang which is recognizable by younger first and second generation non-Boricua Hispanics but not by older Hispanics in the Southwest. So, as I said, the appeal is almost entirely among those immigrant and second generation residents.

In just the San Antonio Metro Survey Area there are 1.6 million Hispanics. Within a two hour drive, there are another nearly 3 million Hispanics, so the attendance of 50,000 at a show for today's biggest Hispanic act is not at all surprising.

Amazingly, the titles being played transcend across Mexican/Cuban/PR societies and most office spaces arguably have no issues airing this format in public spaces. I predict KZEP to be a solid 3 share (6+) by October book and a lower 4 share by November without 95.1 slicing that pie in half. Recruiting 25-34 y/o “Hispanic” but English dominant panelists who could use the extra $$ (Inflation is real) and responsibly carry an extra device will surely lift this uncontested format up.

Reggaetón is as widely played in Chile, Ecuador, Panamá and Bolivia as it is in Puerto9 Rico and Colombia and the US. It's the first truly universal form of Spanish language music since the pop/ballad phenomenon of Julio Iglesias and friends back in the later 60's and 70's.

Nielsen recruits households, not persons. The panel is intended to reflect total proportionality on age groups, gender, ethnicity and race, income and education. There is even a stratification variable that requires quotas of Spanish dominant and English dominant Hispanics in proportion to the annual language study they do for that purpose.
