Alt 92.3 to Become WINS Simulcast

They make no extra money from the tiny and unmeasured listening in TN or FL or ME or other out of metro areas or states. And listening at night produces nearly zero revenue anyway, local or elsewhere.

Well, one of their advertisers was flabbergasted when I called from Ohio and ordered an item from them. They said "We don't even advertise or have our product available in Ohio [although they do now]. How did you even hear about us?" Told them I heard their ad on WCBS and they were thrilled that I responded. So I told them to tell their ad rep at the station. I actually had someone, don't remember who, from WCBS that called me [guess they got my number from the company I bought stuff from, which I wasn't really happy about but, what the hey!] and asked how long I'd been listening, how well did the signal come in in Ohio, blah, blah, blah. Or maybe it was just a bored engineer wondering how well and how far the signal was getting out. Could only assume that they could tell advertisers that "Look, people well beyond NYC can hear us and order from people/company that advertise with us." Except Dr. Leiderman......if I ever hear another one of his ads........... So they may not have personally made money from ME but bet the company decided to keep advertising a little longer than they planned to so they made money off them. I'm probably the exception to the rule but I'm weird that way.
About 20 years ago, a Portland station got a call from a listener in a small Idaho town who listened regularly on the station's stream. Shortly after that, an auto dealer from the same town began advertising on the station. Then, they started advertising on other stations and finally, there were billboards advertising this car dealership around 400 miles away! This went on for several years and I saw quite a few cars with a license plate frame from the dealership! People must have driven over 800 miles to buy a car from there!

Alt Nation is and always was very new music friendly. It was the first place I heard Kelly - Shoes (Which was an early Youtube video) I think it was somewhat better before the merger
Alt Nation is very new music heavy. Way more than the old Ethel channel was on XM pre-merger. They also have a weekly new music show called "Advanced Placement" that they hype up pretty heavily all week long (and repeat it several times). I have heard plenty of stuff from the 2009-2012 era mixed in as well tho. Their sound isn't for me, hence I don't listen to it, but they are committed to a lot of these same songs that people complain about on the mainstream radio, mostly because I think SXM takes a lot of the same methodology to rating songs on their stations as OTA radio.

same as country music right, especially many older vehicles have to buy new radio receivers to receive HD radio.
It's also that so few OEMs support it. I bought a MY2020 car and the sound system has integrated SXM radio, support for both CarPlay and Android Auto, but HD Radio is nowhere to be found. Let's face it, it's a failed standard that is little more than niche at this point.

IIRC, about 35 to 40 years ago, a few Florida (restaurants?) would buy ads during the winter months on WFMT FM because WFMT was carried on some Florida cable systems and some Chicago area residents (and likely WFMT listeners) would spend the winter in Florida.

This was mentioned in a tech article about how the WFMT FM signal was encoded for cable audio distribution (IIRC, a special for cable analog NR system was used, decoded by the cable headend).

It's a format that has remained proprietary since its introduction. Both Sirius and XM bought their way into new cars. Neither Ibiquity nor HD's new owner have ever offered automakers a dime. Sometimes you've got to grease a few palms to get what you want in the corporate world.

Satellite made the money back on subscriptions. HD has no way to recover that kind of incentive costs as its only revenue source is on the sale of proprietary chips or the licensing of those chips to others.

This is no different than the introduction of FM stereo: consumer interest, which took nearly a decade to build up, made manufacturers include the technology in radios. In the case of HD, it satisfies a demand that does not exist at the consumer level.

Audacy needs to get it together with the Audacy app if they want anyone to continue listening to ALT after the switch over. My Android phone is a couple years old but still all major Apps work. Install Audacy however it says not compatible with this device. First time I ever got that message installing anything despite the many apps I have and have installed on my phone. The reviews for the APP are really bad. I however have no issues with their website streaming though on Desktop or mobile.

I also heard they are going to force people to use the Audacy app or their site, so you cannot stream anywhere else but there. They are really shooting themselves in the foot.

It was carried on Music Choice.

It depends. There is very limited in-market streaming of FM stations. It's not like they're risking a lot.

People like apps, and perhaps they can monetize it in someway.

Each time I listen to the app when I run it stops working randomly...

I understand your frustration. I have a secondary phone that is an Android 6.0 Marshmallow. On that phone, the Audacy app doesn't show up on the Google Play Store. The Audacy app only works with Android 7.0 Nougat and later versions. I find the failure to make the Audacy app compatible with older versions of Android to be confusing.

My primary phone is an iPhone. Sometimes, I use it to stream WINS via the Audacy app; and other times, I listen to WINS on the radio.

I thought it might be OS level to but I am on Android 9 and it still says not compatible. It refers to device not compatible so it would seem they were limiting by hardware selection of probably the latest Iphone and Samsung which is ridiculous.. It is not like my Samsung Android can't handle it, every other App runs flawlessly including IHeart, Tunein, etc.

Given the harsh reviews in the App store they need to get their act together.

They had to draw a line somewhere. Android 6 is 7 years old, and the average phone is replaced after 3 years.

So probably they went with double the average and called it good.

Sure, missing hits staying on stiffs or taking 18 months to play a one listen obvious hit like glass animals has killed current formats on fm radio but iheart has done an amazing job with their app and the cash flow goldmine music festivals has made into an admirer of the company as a
whole. It does suck that they treat their talents worse than Apple does their slaves in China, though. Do doubt about it, it's why those who could've kept currents viable refused to work for them or left. They probably fired a few as well. I heart does do good based formats and Christmas well, the later a child could program but facts are facts.

Sorry, auto fill has me fettering, gold based formats. I heart is better than I heart.

There are problems with AltNation, in my eyes, that mirror a lot of the problems current FM alternative stations have in the US. AltNation will play a new hit alternative song from 2022, but then turns around and will play an early 2000’s hit like The Killers “Mr. Brightside” and Jimmy Eat World “The Middle.” SiriusXM really needs to cut the 2000’s alternative from AltNation and focus on “newer” alternative from say 2015 and on. My suggestion would be for SiriusXM to have a Y2K Alternative channel playing alternative hits from 2000 to 2015 and then AltNation can focus on 2015 till today, just like Y2County and The Highway delineates the two stations at the year 2015 for the country music genre. Why SiriusXM has not launched a 2000’s and 2010’s alternative channel is beyond me. Also, Madison is super annoying with her singing so if they could move her to another channel, that would be great too!
