Alt 92.3 to Become WINS Simulcast

I will 100% admit. Jaw dropped. Did not expect this to happen anytime soon.

You can say that again.

Alt 92.3 will be announcing the move on air at 5 pm it appears. It looks like at least some of the talent will be keeping their jobs, Brady seems to have relocated to WDZH Detroit judging by his Twitter.

Same here, and I said as much yesterday. But with the new union contract, they figured why wait?

Funny...when I first saw the headline, I thought they were putting a gambling channel on FM.

Indeed, this is the more stunning part, WCBS 880 reporters and anchors will soon be heard over WINS and vice versa:
Additionally, a historic new agreement with SAG-AFTRA will allow cross-utilization of anchors and reporters for both stations, which will enhance resource sharing and coordination to provide more cohesive and impactful coverage of the Tri-state area. This first of its kind collaboration will allow both stations to bolster their broadcast and digital news coverage, while maintaining their unique brands and specific areas of focus and expertise.
I mean, the fact WINS and WCBS were able to co-exist autonomously for so long under the same common ownership is impressive. It couldn't last forever, but still.

It also makes you wonder about the future long-term viability of WCBS 880.

I think the future of 880 is related to sports. I think the Mets revenue was important to its survival.

The fact they threw in the towel on Alt isn't surprising, but it's more surprising that they are willing to give up the additional revenue stream a music station would provide.

Estimates are that WNYL brought in $10 million a year. So are the cost savings with WINS/WCBS equal to that? There will be no real ratings or demographic improvement from the FM simulcast, if KNX is the model.

The loss is for the alternative rock music fans, who have spent the last few years arguing among themselves about new alt vs. old alt. Now that decision has been made: NO ALT!

LOL at all the folks who said they wouldn't put only one of the news station on FM without the other. The WINS brand is so much stronger and clearer than WCBS with represents a number of now mostly unrelated things

What will it take for NYC to sustain an alternative rock station? I mean, at least we still have Q104.3, 105.5 WDHA, and 107.1 The Peak.
It has more to do with the fact that a current-based alt format is too niche/fractured for it to work. On top of that, when Alt 92.3 moved to a more 90's heavy presentation, WAXQ already had beat them to the punch by adding 90s bands like Foo Fighters, Alice In Chains, Live, Everclear, etc.

Question now is if Audacy is simply abandoning the modern rock format. They traded away X107.5 in Las Vegas, to my understanding the longest-tenured modern rocker in the entire chain, to Beasley last week for a freaking AM station.

Their Alts in Detroit and Miami (the Shark) can easily be blown up to simulcast an AM in their respective clusters.

It had more to do with the fact that billings on 92.3 were enough to have justified keeping the two; as BigA said, it's highly likely that those tanked enough that it didn't hurt enough. It may have been inevitable that this was going to happen, but the timing is surprising. This definitely hurts 880, and it will be interesting to see what ends up happening for that frequency.

And what with WCBS-TV in the process of renaming itself as "CBS New York", eschewing their call letters and channel number from their brand entirely... it's obvious there's been brand dilution as there are three different and unrelated WCBSs out there that mean totally different things.

It might not only be cost savings they are looking at, they might also be trying to stop a billing/revenue decrease from the AM only station.
