GSP September 2022

https://ratings.****************/content/arb191

Strong showing for iHeartMedia - looks like WMYI is really catching on at the expense of WROQ. It appears that neither of the

WORD is COLLAPSING - one month before an important election - LMAO!

98.5’s share is cut in half. 103.3 is somehow up - i have no idea how…too many of the songs are just bad and unfamiliar and it sounds painfully stale outside of that.

Rejoice 96.9 has really done well.

You know its bad when even a Charlotte station (WBAV) is ahead of local stations WORD-AM (The Fan/Former ESPN Upstate), which is tied with WROO 104.9 while WCCP/WAHT (105.5/97.5) didn't even show up, what a waste for sports talk in the market.

WRTH is still Salem's highest rated station in GSP, and their loyal following shows despite being 2 class A signals, hopefully soon they'll move to 95.5 with an even stronger signal for the area. Or even better as discussed before, a move to 94.5 would be great too.

I don’t believe WCCP subscribes to the monthlies, so that is probably why they didn’t register. Like we see with WEPR.

This market can definitely use a classic hits/classic R&b hybrid or Rhythmic AC station, it doesn't seems like a good market for Sports or News/talk. A station like WSOL in Jacksonville or WXBK/WKTU in New York I think would be great...

Also, Classic Country like 105.5 in Asheville or 1170 KYET in Arizona would be a nice bet too.

LOL at WORD’s 3.0 share, especially right before an election. I’m wondering if a shakeup will eventually come or if the wackos will drive the station into the ground.

It used to be a market for news/talk but I think much like other places more and more people are getting sick of the drivel repeated over and over on commercial talk radio. WORD went down a trail of hiring radicals and this is what they get. They are playing to a fringe of their former audience.

I would like to see a rhythmic hot AC station like MOViN 107.7 in Virginia Beach but not holding my breath since rhythmic material doesn’t do very well in the market.

Isn't Hot 98.1 rhythmic?
Hot 98.1 was originally designed to be a flanker for WJMZ which is urban AC and it was thought that the market couldn’t support a mainstream urban and an Urban AC so they went with rhythmic CHR, correct. However it attracts a very different audience than WJMZ or The Block do.

WJMZ is still the only Urban/Rhythmic signal that covers the whole market (98.1 deteriorates badly past Taylors and 94.1 translator in Spartanburg isn’t great). Of course with the success we’ve seen for The Block and Rejoice 96.9 considering their signal limitations, I’m glad to see that consensus was proven wrong.

I believe the Block / Hot 98.1 is too Urban / Hip Hoppy. A station with more throwbacks and R&B would do well, similar to Stations in Charlotte (WBAV/WOSF) or Atlanta (OG 97.9) or Jacksonville (WSOL) or even Las Vegas (KOAS) or New York (WXBK)

WJMZ also seems too much into currents and not alot of gold familiar titles from 20 to 30 years ago

I thought most urban ACs put a lot of emphasis on older songs. This explains why WBAV does so well, because prior to WOSF, I think they did a lot of those.

I’m not an Urban AC expert, so I can’t speak for WJMZ, but for years they could literally do anything and be #1 as they had no competition other than out of market WBAV rimshotting in the market in areas. Heck, they still are #1. They might have re-tooled the music a bit to add hip hop more after The Block came on the air. The Block seems to have reduced WJMZ’s shares some but they don’t have the reach to dethrone them.

Still amazes me Asheville has no urban or rhythmic station even on a translator - and none of the GSP FM’s (98.1 or 107.3 and certainly not The Block’s translators) reach up there other than WFBC HD2 (The Block). I get that it’s different demographically, but it seems like something there’d at least be on a translator.

Iheart is running a pretty good Old School station in Albuquerque that I think would do well here.

KABQ 95.1

The Urban stations around here don't sound like this and ignore lots of those songs from the 1990s and 2000s

Would an HD2 even work in those mountains if anyone were to bother to get an HD receiver?

I've lost WMYI's HD lock on I-26 in parts of Hendersonville, which is its city of license, Asheville was a bit worse.

Same for WSPA in an around Asheville in some places HD locked fine even west of town near Canton, other places struggled to have a clear signal, and even more unusual was a static FM signal but would instead still get a clear HD signal, mostly hit or miss in that area.

WFBC was absent or weak in most of the Asheville area, WTPT was a bit stronger but still had its weak areas.

Seems only 96.5, 99.9 and 105.9 are the mostly problem free strong signals in most of the area that have HD fine in Asheville and down to Hendersonville with little to no trouble.

On my drive back to WCU today, WFBC B93.7 was definitely weaker near Hickory getting off HWY 16 onto I-40, and started bouncing in and out around Drexel and Morganton until I got to around EXIT 96 on I-40, was fine til I got past Black Mountain and then it was weaker after I got past I-26, became stronger until EXIT 37 then it was bouncing in and out until just EXIT 27 for Waynesville, once I got to the split of for Sylva/Maggie Valley the signal took a nose dive and was completely absent starting near the Blue Parkway on 74 and into Sylva and also most Cullowhee until I turned on the road adjacent to Tuck river where it started to bounce in and out just as I turning into WCU, WFBC to make a semi comeback though still not locking in. Normally WFBC would come in just at WCU. As for HOT 98.1 and 107.3 JAMZ I was able them up fine just as I was exiting off I-40. Both 98.1 and 107.3 picked up just fine at WCU, though 107.3 seemed slightly better than 98.1.

Used to be you could get 95.1, 96.1, and 107.9 from Charlotte in parts of Asheville, depending on what side of the mountains you were on. But now I think there may be LPFMs or translators blocking those signals. I know there is now a NC NPR station that blocks WLNK on 107.9 all the way down to Hendersonville. And even GSP radio reception can be challenging in Asheville. I guess that may be why AVL and GSP are separate radio markets, despite being one combined TV market. Challenging topography.

Even in Black Mountain I can no longer pickup Hits 96.1 from CLT due to a new AVL translator on 96.1 rebroadcasting WZGM-AM a "Biz News" station. Therefore, the only CLT station clearly receivable from Black Mountain is Kiss 95.1. I can also pickup 105.3 RNB from Black Mountain, though not as clear.
