KSDO 1130

I saw on FCCinfo.com KSDO 1130 has a CP for 5 kw-D, 300 w-N DA. Are they adding another tower at the current 1360 site?

They are adding 2 drop lines as radiators for a directional system using KLSD tower guy wires. Apparently KSDO has to vacate their El Cajon/Santee site just like KCBQ did a while back.

KSDO lost their site in El Cajon/Santee about 2015/16. The first STA to operate at the KLSD site is in 2016. On Google Earth the site is now full of homes.

The daytime power boost I understand. But why bother with an unusual nighttime DA system (using guy wires??) at much lower power, when they've been operating at 2.5kw non-directional nighttime under an STA for about six years now?

My guess is that it wouldn't pass muster as a fully licensed signal.

The guy wires are insulated and only being used as supports for the drop lines, which are the radiating elements. KSDOs system
will be directional full time. Years ago KRLA (870) in LA converted their single tower 5 kW non-directional daytime system to a high power directional system using drop lines. Also up in LA 1260's center tower was a drop line until Mr. Levine purchased the station and switched out the drop line for a tower.

Thanks for that detail. But I still don't understand why KSDO can't just stay non-directional 2.5kw at night. They've been operating at that power for years, ever since selling their Santee site. Why go down to 500w directional?

The rules for STA operation that they are operating under may allow for power/coverage that is equal to their licensed Grandfathered coverage.
But as soon as they apply for NEW day or night-time license with NEW parameters, especially a change in antenna(s) and location, grandfathered protection to and from other stations in null & void.
They now have to protect other stations co-channel and adjacent channel to 1130, the new and old ones. Thus the reduction in power on the CP.

Thanks for explaining!
