Brian Mulhern Axed From WCTK "Cat Country 98-1".

Longtime Providence area radio personality Brian Mulhern has been laid off from his most recent job at WCTK-98.1, according to this Radio Insight.com article (Brian Mulhern Departs Mornings At Cat Country 98.1 - RadioInsight ).

I wonder if WCTK will replace his local show with either the syndicated Bobby Bones or "Big B And Bubba" morning shows.

Mulhern was probably the highest paid person at WCTK, and a syndicated morning show would probably cost WCTK nothing out of pocket, saving them a huge amount of money.

But it would eat up half of their morning inventory, and also cost them a lot of local sponsorships.

What's interesting to me is this follows the move by Beasley to release Jonathan Weir at WKLB. WCTK is owned by Hall Communications. These are not the big 3 radio owners who are stuck with a lot of debt. This continues to drive home the story of the current advertising slowdown, and what it means for radio.

On a side note, could Weir make the move to Providence? We'll see.

Is Bones' show available to non-iHeart stations? Here in the Upper Valley, we have Big D and Bubba on WXLF/WZLF Hartford/Bellows Falls VT (Binnie Media), but the station's in-market rival, WXXK Lebanon NH (Great Eastern Radio), has a local morning show. What, if any, would be WXXK's options if the advertising crisis were to force layoffs other than going jockless in the morning?

Maybe it was because he had a high salary, but I can’t understand why Brian was axed when Hall’s Providence station - which it bills as its national flagship - is so bare bones. Unlike some Hall stations in smaller markets, including Lakeland and Norwich, Cat Country 98.1 is a juke box half the day, with no jock after 7 PM. Cat Country has been run this way for several years.

Brian Mulhern's former co-host, Jaxon, was recently let go from WMMR in Philly. Likely, there will not be a Jaxon & the Pharmacist reunion, but one can dream.
