Elsewhere on the Planet: FM being switched off

Radio World reports today:

"Switching off FM in Norway and, soon, Switzerland

In 2017, Norway switched off its FM radio services, compelling Norwegians to tune to DAB+. In 2024, Switzerland is set to switch off its own FM services, forcing the Swiss to use DAB+ for over-the-air radio too.

The impact of these “FM switch-offs” on domestic commercial radio was examined during the WorldDAB Summit 2022. It was held by WorldDAB, the global industry forum for DAB digital radio, at London’s King Place and online on Nov. 17."

This is an interesting report on how the move away from even FM is progressing in some parts of Europe where the government has extreme control of radio. In the US, we see how situations in other nations affect radio here. Scandinavia's end of AM and the reduction of FM can be seen in SAAB vehicles having no AM any longer. The near-ending of AM in western Europe affects is also going to affect AM in other nation's cars.

Japan is also working towards an AM switch-off, after expanding their FM band (which was always much smaller than the Western one) to accommodate AM migration. They were one of the AM holdouts for a long time, with many of the main national networks being available only on AM.

This will impact on all those Toyotas and Nissans that currently have AM receivers.

SAAB went bankrupt in 2011. A company called NEVS (National Electric Vehicle Sweden) bought their assets, but retired the SAAB name for good in 2016. NEVS is making an electric vehicle based on the old SAAB 9-3 design, but it is manufactured and only sold in China.

I knew it! David is a secret Chinese operative sent to this forum to send deep American radio secrets back to his superiors in Beijing! :giggle:

FM is still alive in Norway, however. And although Toyotas and other foreign badged vehicles may be designed overseas, many of them sold in America are made here in America (or Mexico, Canada, and America). So there's that angle to the issue.
