CBS FM soundprocessing change or adjustments?

Read something on the other board. Seems like CBS FM changed processors or make adjustments on their current processor. It sounds very punchy and have more 'body' right now, like the stations in the 80's. In my point of view it fit's the classic hits format more with also more 80's in it. It's not so tiny anymore. What are your thoughts?

I have not heard it yet, but it is about time. I like the playlist but could not get past how narrow the audio sounded so I rarely listen. It made me feel like they were doing so people would feel nostalgic like they were listening to WABC music radio or the oldies CBS-FM.

I remember saying to myself, geez they play so much 80s now you would think they would at least tweak the audio to at least sound as good instead of sticking to sounding like the olden days.

Another listen today, but it's indeed improved. It sounds loud, wide and on edge, like back in the 80's. Don't know what they did exactly but it's nice. Maybe the old Optimod is back in the rack ;)

Maybe, but I think CBS FM using Omnia.11 but maybe they load another preset in that box, so it sounds way more punchier than before.

Remember, the presets are intended as a starting point for stations with a competent technical staff. There are so many variables in a station's audio chain that will, to some extent, color the sound that presets can't always take those factors into account. So the usual process is to try various presets and then do fine tuning on the one that is best liked.

Of course, it helps a lot to get a group of station staff members who are in the station's target demo to listen and comment and "score" each setting. An AC station targeting 30-50 year old women won't sound at its best if the 55 year old male engineer does the adjusting. As hearing and audio preferences vary by age, gender and music preferences, it's really critical to have some people who represent the target audience help the engineers to make the best settings.

I worked at a station with an owner at the time who was in his 60s. He set the processing to please his ears, which made the station sound like a tin can to everybody younger.

This is really interesting that you mention this. Here in Dallas, before I even read this thread, I was wondering the same thing about Audacy’s 100.3 Jack FM and also 98.7 KLUV. In early October, they made some changes and the HD logos all disappeared. Jack FM then had pops and clicks on FM and HD for about a month and a half. The online stream wasn’t affected, so I think it had something to do with processing and not the automation system. Here’s a clip of how it sounded:

The first pop/click is at around :15 and the second around :25. Anyways, this has since been fixed and the HD logos are back (although they are all tiny now). When the pops/clicking stopped on 100.3 Jack FM, it almost sounded like they shut the processing off completely. It was very flat sounding. Within the past week, it seems as if they’ve made adjustments and it sounds a lot, lot better!

Maybe Audacy changing something nationwide on their processing on classic hits stations because all Audacy Classic Hits stations sounding exactly the same. Yes and it doesn't effect their streaming processing it sounds dull and flat like it's not processed.
